Have you tried resetting your Airport Base Station to it's default settings? I think this would clear the old information from your previous ISP. Then, when you hook it back up it'll read the settings from your current modem.

yes just tried that. I'm afraid it is still no go. ANy other suggestions? Why does the bllody thing say I'm connected to the net via airport and then refuse to give me a connection? Do you think Apple is at at fault here? wasted too many hours of my life trying to get connected to the net!

In the Network control panel do you have an IP address assigned? Do you have DNS addresses in the DNS field? Using the Network Utility, can you Ping an outside domain like apple.com?

Make sure you power the modem down and back up when switching the ethernet cable between the airport and the Mac so it will recognize the new device.
What IP address range are you getting, just the first two sets of numbers, ex:10.10.x.x
