I needed to move my mp3s off of my HD to a Iomega external HD to save disk space, but I can't figure out how to connect the names of the songs without my iMac attempting to download the files back into my computer.

Does that mean that there is no way to play songs off an external HD through iTunes? There has to be a workaround.

Just set the location of your iTunes library to the external drive (Preferences > Advanced) and consolidate your library (under the Advanced menu). You can then delete the music off the internal drive.

No, they won't be duplicated in your iTunes library. They will not however be deleted off your internal drive so you will have to do that yourself.
