I posted several message on this forum and got no where. I have tried everyting and nothing works. I have a network of a windows XP that has a printer attached to it. As a new commer to MAC world, I purchased a macbook that I love and can see the XP's PC without any probelm. I can also use the drive on the XP to share document back and forth but I can not locate the printer. I followed everyting as I do see the workgroup but I can not see the printer that is attached to that PC. All other PCs on the netwrok, they all see the Printer. The printer is Lexmark and the Mac is using wireless card to access the internet and netwrok. Any idea of what is going on?

If I were to set it up, I would have the printer connected to a wireless spooler so all machines, irrespective of the platform, can access the printer without having to rely on the single host machine that must be on in the current set up... just a thought! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Don't know if this will help...but here goes:
Here at work it's an all PC network.....
To use the printers on the network, I had the printer print out it's settings to get it's IP number.
Then I used printer set up on the Mac to set up a new printer and I typed in the IP number.
Works perfectly now....

The suggestion RichL posted won't work too well in your scenario because your printer is not set up as an IP networked printer.
If you can recap what you've tried so far when you tried to add the printer. We can help to troubleshoot once we know what you've tried.

I agree. It would NOT work. I really bleieved what Rob has emailed me (griffman) should be the answer. I need to install Unix printer support on the XP which I did. I added the printer on the MAC and have it point to the printer through the XP's PC IP address. Everyhting looks fine with no error but I do not get any printout. I am still troubleshooing but that is where I am so far.

I have a Lexmark 323 attached to a Dell locally via USB, set to shared mode. The Dell runs XP Pro.
I didn't have to add Unix driver or anything to the printer.
I just: goto Printer Setup Utility, select add printer, select more printer in the Printer Browser window..., select Windows printing, wait a bit for the workgroups info to be populated, select the correct workgroup, choose the appropriate computer, and voila`... I see the shared connected printer, select the correct driver, done.

doesn't that only work if you leave the Dell computer on 24/7?

Yes. But that is the case with any printer attached to any computer.
Get a network printer if you don't want to depend on a host computer
being on. Xerox/Tektronix makes ethernet printers that play well with
both Macs and PCs.

This is what my probelm is. I do exactly what you have mentioned above - I do see my workgroup andthen the PC running XP but I do not see any printer. I also do have my Lexmark X8520 connected as USB and shared. Still baffled.

I did exactly that also. I am using a MacBook Pro. The printer is connected to a Dell. Another Dell desktop has access to the same printer. Do I need to change any of the settings on the computer that the printer is connected to so it will work with a mac?
