OK... maybe this is out of place here BUT one of my friend's is going to get a laptop soon and I was wondering which brand he should gett. He was looking into Gateway last time I knew which I think is foolish.
I hate Dell as well.

But if u were going to buy a PC {shudder}....

What company would you choose and why what are their qualities or inequalities? Why would or why wouldnt u choose a Dell or Gateway or Sony or {other}.....

Thank you Mac brothers!
Long live Apple.

Beachmac seems to like the Compaqs..I'd probably check those out.

My friend has a Toshiba that is VERY nice...I think I'd consider one of those for sure.

I like my new iBook more though images/icons/smile.gif

If I WERE to get a PC laptop, I would think about Sony, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. I don't know how great they actually are, though. I did see a black Toshiba model at CompUSA and it seems pretty nice. Sony and Fujitsu are two of the PC companies which seem to pay some attention to style. I don't know enough about their relative capabilities to comment, but just by the looks, Fujitsu and Sony are superior to their PC (but not Mac) counterparts.

BUT, tell him to get a Mac instead! Either iBook or PowerBook is much nicer.

I would definitely look into the 2700 Compaq Presario series if there are any left, as I think the 2800 is phasing them out with USB 2.0 I am thinking of it in terms of video editing, thin profile, light weight; same goes for the IBM's.

I currently use a Sony Vio at work. It is a good machine, except for the fact that it is running Windows ME, yucky!!! images/icons/shocked.gif

Anyway, I have used several notebooks including Sony, Dell, Winbook and Micron. I fell that the Sony comes with the best package and has the most bang for the buck. I am not sure about the new models but the Sony I have even came with an Adobe imaging package.

Even though I have only had my ibook for a little over a week (my first Mac), I would give it a much higher rating that any of the PC's that I had used.

Yeah I did encourage him to get a Mac but he doesnt like them and he wants to transfer his old files to his new laptop without buying additional software etc.

How about Winbook?

He doesnt like Sony for some reason. I love my Mac.... and if I were to get a laptop... it would be a PowerBook.

The new Toshiba that comes in the blue case, I don't know the model #, is very nice. Try to stay away from Compaq and HP with thier integrated graphics cards and shared ram. Winbooks are okay, but everytime I've used one, the fan continually comes on even when the comp is not hot. If your friend does not need to run specialty software, get him to buy a TiBook. You can't beat it!

Toshiba and Fujitsu are great. Sony is good i've heard. I hate compaqs. I tried a laptop 2 years ago and it was awful. It did nothing but crash. The same with HP.

I am actually considering getting a Fujitsu p-2110 if i don't get an ibook cuz i'm still a PC guy.

Good luck finding a good PC (is that possible?) laptop.

Alex

Well, at this very moment, I have an IBM Thinkpad a31p connected to the 23" HD Cinema Display, and it's awesome...

Ah, Sterling, what sort of GPU on that IBM?
Is that the top of the line model? What is the max GPU and CPU and HD you can have?
Lastly can it come with IEEE-1394?

In talking with a bunch of PC junkies (the terminal stage of pc cancer) Here's what they said the break down was for quality (Best to worst) 1)IBM 2)Winbook 3)Dell 4)Sony 5) Toshiba 6) Fujitsu 7Compaque, HP,Sharp Gateway. (The 7 crowd they wouldn't touch with a 10 foot poll.) Honestly, the IBM's are big bucks, but they last a whole lot longer than most other pc's. While its been said before, Apple is the biggest bang for your buck. Its viability is a year longer than PC's and its total opperating costs are lower as well.

Toshiba makes a darn good labtop, dell's are HUGE-but if you get past taht and the hatred of dell then they make decent labtops.Gateway also makes a good one. I would stay away from compaq/hp.

I suggest getting one with firewire, so therefore a Sony. Otherwise wait for USB2. I find the classic PC ports to be fragile, slow and in general limiting, in particluar compared to towers or desktops.
