Cd drive spits out cds without reading them, HELP!

I am using the new iMac and on OSX. My drive here has been making a funny sound lately, but today when I put in a cd, the drive takes it in, then automatically spits it out. It doesn't even read it or ask how to format it. It does not show up on the desk top. I have shut down and rebooted.
Any suggestions?
