Hi
If you are using a router, try connecting directly to the modem.
NOTE: You may have to reset the modem for this change to work, especially with cable modems. All indicator lights will show it is operating correctly but you will have no access to the Internet. Sometimes simply pressing the tiny reset button on the modem does it, sometimes it requires leaving the modem disconnected from AC power for 30+ minutes.

So, I hooked up directly to the modem, and my download speed went up 1 meg, and my upload went from 50 kbps (router) to 500 kbps! so something must be up with the router, maybe compatability or something.. idk, but i'd love to find out about it.

Someone up there mentioned Limewire.
In theory, if I was to use limewire to download uncopyrighted material, would I get malware? I had been using a version of limewire on my pc that didn't give malware (I run a pretty tight ship and i would have noticed) and I'm considering runnng the same thing on mac. As far as I know and have been told, even if a program tried to give a mac malware, there wouldn't be any spyware or such for the OS anyway,
So I guess this is a two part question:
1> We know there aren't really any viruses, but are there any adware/spyware concerns on mac?
2> Are any P2P clients (esp Limewire) problems for giving malware to macs?

Not that I know to both questions. Most -- If not all -- viri, spyware, adware, ... are compiled into EXEs, DLLs, ... that are only usable under Micro$oft Windows.

Don't say that man, if you are mad and frustrated say and move on. Mac's can act like crap just like any other piece of iron.
If someone jumps all over you for spilling your guts, they have the problem.
Sounds like you got a lemon dude, but it can be resolved very easily.

heh thanks for understanding, it's going faster now, especially when im not on my home router, that slows it down like crazy, but you know what they say, or at least a poster on my teachers wall says; When life gives you lemons, make lemonade ;P

Ah. DLink.
Yes, I've had some real problems with DLink routers (wireless, anyway), especially their older ones. They might be better, now. You might want to upgrade or switch to another brand. I've had good luck with LinkSys & NetGear.
Might as well go for 'g' band, while you're at it - will make things faster between you and the router (and other machines on your net, if you're doing that)(not on the inet, though - that speed is governed by your landline.)
Also, you might want to upgrade your OS. 10.4.8 is the latest version.
I'm also a long-time Windows user. The Mac (MacBook) seems to have a slight edge on network speeds. I note also that my VM Win under Parallels seems to have an edge, speedwise, over other Win machines on the net. Not totally sure why this should be, but it seems to be.
