You may be jaded, but it isn't just you. I also don't think Atmosphere deserved first place in this.
I get the impression most people voted with the interests of flashy graphics and eye candy in mind, rather than what would actually be useful to them.
Edit: I don't mean to sound overly harsh to the contestants, so I hope it's not coming across that way. I still think they all did an amazing job in concepting and lobbying, and I can't fault them for their enthusiasm in seeing their ideas turn into reality. I guess I'm just being selfish in that I would have liked to see apps win that I feel I could get use out of. Well, at least Cookbook was in the top three.

I didn't mean to trivialize the syncing process.
In its purist form it is quite simple. If I have three machines I will make sure my systems are synced before I make changes to files. If not, I will introduce a duplicate of that file with a change in the filename ~ documentxv1026.doc. That way I can later merge the content of documents v1025 & v1026 myself.
If you use multiple machines without keeping them in sync, and then you re-introduce them to the mix ... then the system has to let you decide. For me this scenario would be pretty rare, but I know what you mean.
Anyhow, I was just pointing out that it is imo far easier to setup and maintain compared to hijack.

Maybe I'm jaded. Maybe my iMac is right next to a window.

As I understand it, Atmosphere is like looking out a window in any selected location of the world, not just your backyard.
