Firewire Problem?

Yesterday when I plugged in a removable drive it wouldn't mount. I restarted, several times, plugged, unplugged cables, turned the drive on and off and given up, and then suddenly it mounted after about five minutes, although I had to let it sit mounted for a couple before I could open a drive on the desk top. I thought I hadn't shut the drive down right and maybe damaged it or something like that. Today my computer won't recognise my firewire scanner. I'm guessing these are related issues but I don't know where to go from here.

Dual 1.25 PowerPC G4, 1.5 GB Ram - 10.4.8
Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner
AccomData 120 GB Ex. Firewire Drive
Everything was fine afte the last software update...
