Printing to windows networked printer NOT in menu

I'm having issues printing to a windows network attached printer. I can add the printer by browsing the network etc, but the actual printer model (a canon MP780) is NOT in the menu of available printers. I tried all the available canon printer drivers and gimp print and some drivers will allow me to print but the quality is poor or the print is just weird. I've tried downloading the driver from the canon website, but no luck on that front either.
I'm new to mac so this is all new to me.
any help would be greatly appreciated!
