Dang, now my first gen MacBook is obsolete! Oh, the shame of a three-month useful life. Anyone want a solid black doorstop?
Yes, I'm kidding. My machine isn't obsolete, it's just no longer the fastest MacBook on the block. And that's fine with me, as this one was already fast enough for my portable needs. As I often say, buy when you have to buy, and then don't look back.
I'm actually somewhat surprised Apple did this -- I thought they might leave the MacBook on the first-gen Core Duo, just to further separate the MacBook Pro from the entry level machine. I'm not upset that they did this, of course, just surprised /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Finally, finally, FINALLY! Christmas comes early! This is the Mac that I've been waiting for to replace my faithful, but painfully slow, 450MHz slot-loading iMac. Thank you Cupertino.
FYI, the black model comes with a WHITE charger and video adaptor. This seems like a huge fashion faux pas for a company that normally sweats the details...

I'm with you Rob.
I think my MacBook (4 months old) is just fine.
It has all of the power I neeeded.
The big diff with the new models (besides the processor) seem to be the DL DVD drive (Which I have in my G5 but rarely burn DL) and the larger HD options.....which are probably cheaper to replace yourself....and the memory installed by Apple.
I'm very happy with my MB and will be using it for many years to come.
...and it's still shiney!! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I feel your pain! Actually, this update is pretty great. 1 Gig of Ram for the two higher-end models, larger hard drives, faster processor. I hope Apple sells a ton of these for Christmas this year!

Ditto. Will be ordering as soon as the store comes up, to replace my G3/600 iBook. Have to decide whether to go low-end or bump up to the 2GHz in the meantime.
...

(drumming fingers, an hour later)
Seems like a long downtime for what appears on the surface to be a fairly small change to one product line.

Well, this is just the news I was waiting for before hitting the "buy" button at the Apple Store.
Now if only they'd throw in a more robust GPU...

Great news! We were going to wait for the introduction of 10.5, but it's getting tempting. I'm very curious as to if this will affect battery lifetime. That could be a decider between a refurb MBPro and a new MB.

This should be an interesting Christmas for Apple, especially with this and the low end Imac.

something is a foot at the circle k........
apple's online store is currently down. i highly doubt it's down just because of the macbook updates. me thinks something else is going on.

Griffman,
Do you like the glossy screen? Just wanted your opinion on the issue of the glossy screen only option in the MacBook. I sure wish that Apple Computer Inc. would offer a matte finish screen option for the MacBook, because the glossy screen is a show stopper for me on that computer.
I received a Dell Inspiron at work that was supposed to come with a Matte Finish screen, however Dell changed it to a glossy screen. I hate the glossy screen because of all of the reflections it produces and prefer matte finish screens, albeit that matte screens may not display saturated colors and black as well as glossy screens.

Ooh, you're right. Could it be just for the bumped up MacBooks? Seems kind of unlikely, but you never know.
Hopefully you're right and something else is coming.
Now, as for these new MacBooks- sweet! I really have no need for a laptop. But need isn't the issue. I want one. I'm seriously considering plunking down for the low or mid range model. Though I'll wait and see what the actual reviews have to say about these new ones before I make a move.

I don't know about Rob's opinion on the glossy screen. Personally, I'm torn on it. I honestly think it looks a lot nicer, but.....it also has a lot more reflection! It's like you have to choose one or the other, there's no happy medium or clearly superior choice. That said, I think the matte finish--while not as stunning--would offer fewer moments of reflection-frustration.
So if you prioritize reducing the bad before enhancing the good, I'd stay with matte.
But the glossies really do look so vibrant. When I walk by them in the Apple store, I always stare at them longer.
