I'm a bit surprised as well that Apple updated the macbook already. I too thought they would let the MacBook Pro stand out a little longer.
All that is left now is bringing the mac mini to C2D and fitting higher resolution screens in the MBP /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Interesting to note that now the black model is only carries a $50 premium over the white one. In the old configurations, it set you back an extra $150 with a machine configured exactly the same. Now, I won't feel so bad about splurging for the black one!

Forgive the picking of the nits, but do they have other consumer notebook models? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I don't consider revisions and updates to be separate models.

I'm actually somewhat surprised Apple did this -- I thought they might leave the MacBook on the first-gen Core Duo, just to further separate the MacBook Pro from the entry level machine. I'm not upset that they did this, of course, just surprised

Yes, the MacBook and the MacBook Pro are getting too close in capability. You know what, I think that portends good things for the future. If Apple is letting the MacBook gain features that push it that close to the MacBook Pro, maybe...Apple has some surprises coming for the Pro to fling it far ahead of the MacBook again. Better video? Higher resolution? External SATA? Do something interesting with all the extra space in the 17" case?
Isn't the Aluminum case design almost 4 years old now?
Let's hope it's a fun Macworld SF in just 8 weeks...

Yes, but I'm still quite annoyed with Apple's enforced premium on the black MB. For example, why are we not allowed to choose the black case but downgrade the system to an 80 GB HD? It starts at 120 and goes up. No option to go down. If they have to crack it open to put a larger drive in on a custom config, it's the same procedure as putting a smaller one in, right??
I realize they don't normally do this with any of their configs, whether with the MB, MB Pro, iMac or Mac Pro, but dangit.
It just seems crazy to me that just to get the black case, you MUST take the 120 GB HD, 1 GB RAM and SuperDrive. No downgrade options for any of it, so no way to actually get the price down if all you want is the black case. I hate it when they do stuff like that.
As someone pointed out when the MacBook first came upon the scene, they don't charge extra for a black iPod video or nano, so why do they do this with the MacBook??

Do you like the glossy screen? Just wanted your opinion on the issue of the glossy screen only option in the MacBook. I sure wish that Apple Computer Inc. would offer a matte finish screen option for the MacBook, because the glossy screen is a show stopper for me on that computer.

I thought the same thing when I was preparing to go from my iBook (matte of course) to a MBP. But I finally got the glossy. Truth is, both screens suffer from reflections. The matte surface diffuses the reflections so you notice them less, but unless youre in total darkness they kill contrast and color saturation. The glossy screen shows you annoying mirror images, but if you position it right you can avoid that, and get the better dynamic range the screen is capable of. Compare the two if you can, but Im very happy with my choice.

Because they can. They charge a premium for the black MacBook because the black MacBook is a premium machine - it's a status piece. And people are paying for it.

But the glossies really do look so vibrant. When I walk by them in the Apple store, I always stare at them longer.

Thanks for your opinion -- I really appreciate it.
Agreed -- on the Dell Inspiron I have at work it does look very vibrant and the blacks are really nice and black. If I could only get that type of display without all of the reflections it would be great.
I will have to take a look at the MacBook when I go to buy another laptop. Perhaps Apples screen is not as objectionable as the 17" Dell laptop screen I have at work.

It is not a question of whining. It is a matter of money and preference. I have a 17" Dell Inspiron at work with a glossy screen. While I agree that the display is vibrant in color and the blacks are much better on it I do not like all of the reflections in it. So if I am spending my hard earned $$$ on a laptop I am not going to buy one with a screen that I do not like or prefer.
You really should think before you write such inane statements as above.
