Can you all imagine how different the world would be if people got as excited about global warming or world peace as they evidently do about a stupid game console??? What a world!!!

It is just you. Just consider the kind of games they will be playing on the unit, and you'll realize that a riot at the stores logically becomes an extension to that. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

What is with all this nonsense about kids this... and kids that? Sony is marketing this as a home entertainment console and to anaverage age of 26-33. I know I am old, but when did 33 become a kid?
I would also like to point out that as of today Sony has won the HD DVD/Blu-ray video war.
HD DVD players sold through to consumers 50,000
Blu-ray players sold through to consumers 400,000 ((by year end 1 million (if Sony can meet PS3 production goals).)

More than any other species, I think.

More then any other species? I guess you have not herd of sharks eating all their siblings before they are born (I guess it's a good thing that baby humans are born with out teeth, if not imagine twins or triplets). Or hyenas killing also their siblings so they can become the dominant female. Even zebras and dolphins have their dark side. Males of both species can be rather aggressive when a female is in in heat. So, as far as humans go, we are actually pretty gentile as far as animals go. Just don't but a Playstation 3 on sale, because then all hell brakes loose.

I'm sure many of these people don't take any action whatsoever regarding social problems, world turmoil, etc., but when the latest toy comes out - BAM! Waiting in line for hours, fighting over the first spot.
Seems pretty sad to me.

I guess you weren't old enough to remember the fights that broke out over Cabbage Patch Dolls. Makes the PS3 thing seem almost normal.

I think, if they were truly illegals, the letters "INS" (or is it "DHS" these days?) might increase the trust factor. Just a thought...

Hi
I am aware of the number of species who eat their young or something like penguins, that try to fight and claim young that aren't theirs.
Anywho...
I'm sure if we could do more at a younger age, ... we ( humans ) certainly would.
Plus...What other species is more than willing to kill thousands of it's own daily or even in a second? ( WMD ).

My friend that manages at one of the popular chains in my area, told me earlier this week that the US would only be getting 120k PS3s. They only shipped one to his store for today. I can tell you that it didn't got to the first name on the pre-order list, it went to the peep that was willing to spend the most, as in buying plenty of extras, out of the first bunch.

I saw the hundreds of people in line in Boston yesterday. They are insane. Some waited for more than a day...in the rain...don't they have real jobs?
A lot of these people are waiting to buy this thing so they can make a quick $600-$800 on eBay. Anyone paying double or triple the retail price has more money than brains. I hope these people who waited in long lines just to make a quick buck, choke on their profits. Those of us who simply want one to actually use it are going to have to wait until these scalpers are done with their little fiesta.

Well my view... why not just wait?
If you wait you will get the console at a better price and there will also be more games available for you to play.
Why would you bother with one at this stage?

Say that again when the Wii is released.

Yeah, the funny thing is that among my friends, nobody is really interested in having a PS3... aside from selling them on eBay, of course.
It seems pretty absurd to me. There's not a huge selection of Blu Ray movies out, so buying a PS3 for that is a little premature in that area - not to mention that Blu Ray movies aren't going to be tremendously more impressive than DVD's.
Better? Yes. More of an improvement than the VHS->DVD Transition? Doubtful. Or to put it this way: the last DVD player I bought was for my parents for $39. A Blu-Ray player, at the cheapest, is $600 (PS3). A stand-alone unit is $1000. And on eBay the PS3 is close to $2000.
Is Blu-Ray better than DVD? Yes. But is it $600, $1000, or $2000 better?
Hmmmm........
Not to say that a new format like HD-DVD or Blu Ray won't be successful, but it's going to take a lot longer for the adoption rates to go up (unlike with DVD, where people rushed out to upgrade). Most people are probably holding out for a dual-format player, or a Blu-Ray disc writer.
(Honestly, being able to write 50GB to a disc is more appealing to me now than the increased realism from going from a 9.4GB movie to a 50GB Movie).
Plus there aren't a whole lot of games out for the PS3... certainly none that are really amazing yet (at least IMHO).
And then you have the people on eBay that might actually be buying these things for $2,000+.
Why?
You can buy a pretty decent computer for that and run Quake 4 and Doom 3 and get better image quality than the PS3 will provide.
At $600 the PS3 is a "deal" (for the supposed price of the hardware). At $2000 it's not that impressive compared to a similarly priced computer.
Regardless, Sony will sell out of the PS3's - they have such a shortage of them that it's inevitable.
The real question is this: How many buyers are just scalpers, and how many are actual gamers?
Personally I think Nintendo is going to eat Sony's lunch this round, at least until Sony comes out with more must-have-games and drops the price to historical console-price levels. At this point in time, all they've got is hype.

If Sony had had the guts/infrastructure to do it, they should have bypassed the opportunists and put ALL of these holiday units up for auction on eBay. It would have helped get the whole economy of scale thing moving along a lot faster so that production would increase and the unit price could drop next year a lot quicker.
By the way, I don't use the word 'opportunists' in a negative connotation--I admire them and don't blame 'em one bit for scalping something that will still be available down the road after the early-adopters get these first ones.

I've yet to see any games for the new consoles that I'd really be interested in -- I'm a casual game player, and definitely not into the FPS games that seem to be all the rage. Last console system I owned was the SNES.
I'm intrigued by the Wii because of the motion controller, but still want to see what kind of games it has -- I do like the assorted Zelda series. In the meantime, I'll stick with my DS Lite, which I can at least play in bed when trying to get to sleep...
