BTW, when is going Palm to updated the aging Palm Desktop for Mac?

I think the answer to that question is "never," but it's probably for the better. The Palm Desktop software is terrible. Anyone using a Palm device would be better served with The Missing Sync for Palm OS. I can see a future where Palm will bundle a version of TMS.

Interesting...I'll have to check with Palm.

We do not need Palm Desktop just for Sync; we need it mainly as a Mac database for large memos, addresses and so on. Better than iCal for us
What is TMS? Thanks.

According to Palm's own comparison table, our 650s are capable of EDGE -- I intend to look into this when I get the chance, as Palm thinks it's possible.

Checked with Palm PR, and yes the 650 does support EDGE, and Cingular supports the 650 with EDGE.

Cingular supports the 680 as well. It just went up this morning as a phone option.
I wonder if the 680 fixes the terrible microphone that plagued the 650. That and its infamous instability were the only two things that made it less than perfect. My 650 reboots about once or twice a day. Thankfully the reboots happen very quickly and it automatically reconnects to the network. But the microphone problem has been like the black plague. Both my original 650 and the replacement I received after complaining had the same issue: when using the built-in mic the person on the other end could barely hear me even when shouting. When using Bluetooth all is well. After using a friend's Blackberry Pearl for a few hours I can honestly say that I would stick with the Palm Treo despite the mic problems.

Hi All,
I'm on the market for a new smart phone.
What I really want is to be able to access my contacts (Address Book) and calendar (iCal) at all times.... at home, at work, at the studio, or on the go.
I need a smart phone that can synchronize between 3 macs + the phone. If I add/edit an appointment from one of the macs or from the phone, I want it to propagate through to all the rest.
Does the Treo 680 do this? Treo 700p? Is there a better candidate?
It's too bad that Apple doesn't support this the way that they support cameras in iPhoto.
I don't really want to install & use TMS or Palm Desktop on all my machines. Too much hassle.
Maybe 10.5 will support this better? Maybe the iPhone? We shall see. In the meantime, which device should I get??
Thanks for sharing any wisdom...
Doug

As a present 650 owner.... Sorry, but that's not $199 compelling reasons.

But consider that 650 owners can trade in their phone and receive $125. The new phone then costs just $74. Click "special offers" on the Treo 680 page.

OK, that's somewhat more compelling -- didn't even notice it. Thanks!

I'm interested to see what people recommend as well. Right now I have a Kyocera 7135 Palm phone that is showing it's age. I basically just need to be able to sync and edit contacts, calendar and notes on the go. I don't actually use the mobil web, because I don't want to pay for the data plans. It's too bad Palm won't put WiFi in it. I'm near a computer often enough that I don't need to access email and web on the go, but when I'm away from my computer, I can usually get to a WiFi hotspot, which would be free.
iPhone is intriguing, but if it is just an iPod/phone combo, then I'm not interested. If Apple attempts to do a smart phone, I'm sure it will rock.

Why not sync to one and let .Mac sync all your Macs? Works great for me.

Hmmmm. Although I have yet to try this across multiple Macs, I sync my MOTORAZR V3 and Palm T5 to my Address Book and iCal with iSync over Bluetooth. I simply put everybody together in the same room, hit iSync and they are all simultaneously sync'd up together. It's really rather elegant IMHO.
No Palm Desktop around.... /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Please explain to me the difference between GSM and EDGE and EDVO. Cingular lists the phone as primarily a GSM phone(I think), which is really archaic. Is EDGE automatic or only available in certain areas? Also I noticed that the 680 has half of thr memory that the 700p has.
