I was undating my macbook last night, it was the newest Itunes and some upgrade about sleeping errors...so i did that and it told mee i had to reset and so i did, when it came backon there was a loading screne showing a little progress bar ( assume it was for the upgrade) about half way through it cut off, without warning.
I tried to restart it, and it makes all the noises it usually does onmly the screne is black. The battery is fully charged, i trued doing it without the battery...same thing. I have had my macbook for about 5 months and never had problems with it. It left my hour 3 times each time without dropping in a case... I dont take it off of my desk around the house usually. And when i do i always close it........
I have no idea what is wrong with it....I have the apple protection plan and i have to call them tomorro. But is this a common problem? Will mac fix it? Can I fix it myself?

Sounds like it died halfway through a firmware update, which is bad. Usually very bad. This might require a trip to an Apple store, or at the least, a call to support.
You might try removing everything other than keyboard and mouse and restarting again, and hold down cmd-option-P-R to reset PRAM and maybe the updater will try to run again. But if it really died halfway through, I think you may have bigger issues -- I'd call Apple's support line if you have no success with further reboots.

Maybe try to start from the Install DVD before. If it work, backing up the hard disk and reinstalling the system should do the trick. It's quite laborious but depending how far from the nearest Apple store you are, it can worth it. If not, no other choice than what was proposed before.

Stuff is still on your HD, until or "if" you reformat.
Installing a new system should leave your files intact....
Do you have a back up?
If you do perhaps you can try to reboot from that using FW traget mode?
