For months now I have been dealing with my first gen iPod Shuffle which just won't play in order. I already had it exchanged at Apple but still won't do. And now it got even worse. I carefully drag the podcasts in order (all i ever listen to) and when I pull out the iPod and reconnect it the order is all wrong. I can never listen to podcasts in order or to audio books. I am startig to get EXTREMELY frustrated. Any help is appreciated. Should I buy a non Apple player instead? Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, that's why its a "shuffle" -- it shuffles songs (podcasts) for variety. I think you need a regular iPod in order to get it to play in your preferred order.

Is this a joke?! It is called a Shuffle for a reason! What did the Apple Store say when you exchanged it?

make a playlist in the order you want and drag it onto the ipod. make sure shuffle is turned off. pretty easy.

thank your to the first two joksters to reply. Of course I tunrned off the shuffle mode and so it is set to play in order. As far as the third reply: It does not work. Thanks

I, too, have a Shuffle and love the variety of it picking the songs. But, I bought my wife a 2G Nano so she could use the display to select the chapters of the audiobooks she want's to listen to. I've had some issues with the songs I've recorded (not using an iPod) not playing in the order I arranged them.
What else do you have on your Shuffle? Just audiobooks? Other files?

I've been reviewing the instruction booklet for my Shuffle. The only thing I see is that you don't want Autofill or random play in iTunes and the switch on the back of the Shuffle has to be set to the middle position (between off and shuffle).
If you have these in order, then, I have no further suggestions.

i bought one for my girlfriend and she has no problems playing the songs in the order we put them on it.

This is a problem with the iPod Shuffle in general, not your specific unit. It is a problem introduced with the upgrade to iTunes that removed the capability of maintaining a Shuffle-presence even when the Shuffle was unplugged. I have no idea what the proper channel is for submitting this bug.
