Jason,
Do you have any idea of when Apple's killer robot will be released? Even if it's just a rumor. I don't need a new phone, but a killer robot would be awesome.
This will have a naming problem too, as iRobot is already trademarked.

I predict the MurderMac Robot will be released in 2008...

My guess is that it'll be branded something like 'Phone iPod', a la Nike. If Apple teams with existing carrier(s), it might be something like 'Verizon iPod' or 'Cingular + iPod' or the like.
Either that or iWork-style branding: 'Calls'.

Cool. I'll be ready just in time for when Google becomes self-aware.

I'll wait for MurderMac Robot Pro. I need more expansion.

...although the "tunes" in iTunes is problematic, since it connotes music.

And "iTunes Store" is having problems selling TV shows and movies because the store name, which contains "Tunes", connotes music? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I bet you the powers that be at Apple regret linking their app and store to music as a genre....

I don't think so. They have always maintained that music is in our DNA, and their support of video does not change that belief I'm betting. At the heart of the iPod is music. Anyone who believes that Apple sees video as supplanting music for Apple's focus are suffering from a major pipe dream.
Maybe the iMovie store will split off in the future and be an entity of its own if it ever does get as big. But iTunes is now a brand as much as a description, so I don't think the name means that much any more in terms of what it describes.
Sorta like this site for many of us is still MacCentral, even though it's been absorbed. I still think of it as where I used to get my Mac news, MacCentral. Calling it Macworld has not changed why I come here. I rarely visited MacWorld before (after all, I was and still am a Subscriber to the dead-tree version), and for the time I spend here, the majority of it is no different than when it was separate from Macworld. So call it what you want, to me it's MacCentral, the creation of Jim D. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Then we'll just have to disagree. I believe that if they had it to do all over again, they'd give iTunes a more media-neutral name, just as they did with iPod.
As for Macworld/MacCentral, you can believe whatever you want -- if you want to believe that Jim D is posting all the articles while the rest of us sip ice teas and let the warm ocean waters lap at our feet, you're welcome to your quaint notions! (Get back to work, Jim.)

I am thinking for phone naming:
Basic Music Phone: iPod Phone or iTunes Mobile
Smart Phone: Mac Phone
Online media manager for the phones: Mobile Me (trademarked quite some time ago by Apple)

Hey everyone
I like it when someone more important and credible than me echoes my own ideas. After talking with my Dad and running across a forum <can't remember where> that ran along the lines "Iphone's a dumb name and i anything is old and cliched". I agree with Jason and I think it's far more likely that Apple will pull a repeat of what they did with the iPod video...It's an iPod with video abilities...not a portable video player with iPod abilities. For a while and from Steve's own mouth I believe it was always iPod with Video and as such I think an iPod with phone or cell is more likely than an autonomous 'iphone'
