I don't think you guys need to b about Cingular. While their network might not be the best, it's still better than Verizon's by a long shot. Plus, I'd been looking at getting a Blackberry, but now that I can get a Blackberry-like device from Apple, AND it's a widescreen iPod, I might be able to swing it.

Here's a curiosity: Will the iPhone be able to use external monitors? I ask because on the Amazon page for the 8GB iPhone under "Accessories" it lists "Compatible Monitors." Check out the page here.
Probably just an Amazon automated marketing thing and not really related. However, speaking of accessories I can't wait to see what comes out for it.

I wonder why Steve only compared the iPhone to more limited devices such as the Motorola Q and Blackberry, neither of which have touch screens. And while the Palm Treo has received many good reviews, the screen is not as big as some of the other Windows Mobile devices. A more suitable comparison would be with something like the UTStarcom XV6700 which is available from both Sprint and Verizon.

I already have it, was going to change to nextel, but this is what the NEWTON was suppose to be way back then. They envisioned it, just not the right time.
Now these portable devices are cool, the hottest thing, and everyone is making them and buying them up. Did not work in the 90's. Hey fail once, try it again.

UPDATE ON CISCO'S iPHONE TRADEMARK - Intellectual property is the lifeblood of Silicon Valley and we all have to protect our property. As most are likely aware, the iPhone trademark is owned by Cisco. We (Cisco) had hoped to reach an agreement to share our trademark with Apple, yet they decided to use the name without our agreement, so we, unfortunately, are having to go to court to stop them from using the name. It is not about money. We still hope we can reach an agreement, but when your neighbor steals your property, you have no recourse other than to call the cops and file a complaint. Eh? What makes you think this? Here in the UK, if you buy a subsidized mobile it'll be locked to the provider's network; no switching SIMs to a different provider. Though you can legally pay to get it unlocked when your contract expires.

I said i'd be willing to pay 800 for an unlocked phone. What you have proposed is $800 for a locked phone.

Sure, that's a 2 year deal for the contract and phone services, having said that, the 2 year deal DOES NOT INCLUDE THE UNLIMITED EDGE NETWORK, THAT COSTS AN ADDITIONAL $49.95 PER MONTH! IT'S $15 WITH T-MOBILE AND $19 WITH VERIZON.
GET WITH IT CINGULAR, $49.95 PER MONTH, GET SERIOUS! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Very nice, I'll probably buy one, BUT: I came to Macworld Expo for MAC NEWS! What is this Expo turning into? iPhoneworld? iPodworld? I HATE IT!
It's even worse, I understand Apple has many Mac-related updates in the pipeline, but are not introducing them here and now, presumably so that iPhone gets all the attention. BUT IT'S CALLED MACWORLD! I WANT MAC STUFF, not two zillion more iPod cases and an iPhone I can't even buy now.
Also, what if I want an iPod video with widescreen? Now I have to sign a two year Cingular contract just to look at my movies?
I really don't like this. I think I'll stop traveling to SF for Macworld Expo, since it's not Macworld anymore.

After watching the keynote, the software on the iPhone is very impressive. However, $599 is still very expensive...didn't work for the iPod Photo either. Maybe when the price gets cut in half over time.
What they need to do is take that sweet widescreen touch display and slap it on the iPod! Hopefully it won't be long for that to happen.

Hi
A little blab about this whole 3G cellular carrier b*h fest.
From what I read -- Sorry, no specific links as I just don't feel like doing a lot of searching right now but feel free to search yourself -- that Verizon isn't popular to upgrading their network and even after purchasing AWS licenses, will still likely take a very long time to implement and they can afford to wait. My point being, WCDMA seems a long way off in the US and therefore, GSM is the largest worldwide standard. I have a WCDMA / GSM phone that was big in Europe, ... ( Nokia 6630 ) and the 3G ( WCDMA, ... ) features will likely do me no good in the foreseeable future here in the States. One must also consider that Cingular customers can also use T-Mobile towers and therefore you can add in their coverage.
Want more proof that 3G phones aren't what they are praised to be on this side of the 'pond'? Look at the Internet [speed] and other technology offering here compared to that of Europe / Aisa / ... Verizon's FIOS service offers a very close value to that but is quite limited to where it is currently offered. Let's face it, we Americans are willing to pay these prices and so companies aren't going to worry about offering better value. Quite annoying but true.
