Editors' Notes Weblog: Expo reaction: iDisappointed

Thanks for all the feedback, but it seems many of you missed my point. I'm not disappointed by the iPhone, nor by Apple TV. I really do think that they are paradigm-shifting devices, the iPhone in particular. I think it will drive the company in new directions,
My disappointment stems from the fact that this is Macworld Expo, and it has historically been about Macs, OS X, and related hardware and software. By choosing to not even mention those areas this morning, Steve sent a very clear message that the event is no longer about those things.
If this is a trend for the future, then, it gives me little reason to attend the show: why bother coming to see Apple's booth? I just walked through it, and they're showing Final Cut Express, iLife '06, iWork '06, Aperture, and a bunch of other stuff I already know about. There's one wall where they do have some Apple TVs lined up, but the iPhone is nowhere to be found. So why did Apple bother taking a 20,000 square foot booth to show everyone last year's technology?
So to summarize, the disappointment is with the avoidance of all things Mac at an event that's historically been dedicated to the Mac. If Macworld Expo isn't the right spot to talk about new Mac hardware and software, I'm not sure what is. Yes, they'll hold a special event for Leopard, iWork, etc. But it won't be something I'll be able to attend, nor will it be open to the general public as is the Expo. As a result, I won't be able to ask the engineers questions about the hardware, nor talk to members of the iWork team about new features, etc. -- these are all things I can do (and have done) at past Macworld Expos, and they have helped me gain a better understanding of Apple's products. It seems that era has closed...

The iPhone is just fantastic. Could not be better. That's all we needed right now. Patience. In a few weeks Apple will once again send a private invitation for another event. New OS and new hardware. Good times ahead. Although not for our wallets . . . . . .

Well I for one agree with the writer of this article and disagree with most of you zealots in this forum. A thousand years of your arguments will never replace the fact that "no serious Mac-related annoucements were made at a show named 'MacWorld.'"
If the show was not named "MacWorld" I would not agree with the article-writers conclusions, and there would be nothing but good in it. But simply because there was a lot of good at the show will not work to bury the clear irony of there being no major "Mac" annoucements at a "Mac show." Call it something else and lets move on. But don't keep calling it "MacWorld" and avoid mentioning new Macs. To me, that borders on the very "deceptive" (luring the "Mac faithful" to a show which is suppose to center on Macs, but ends up not). But then, some of you may recall that Jobs himself said, prior to his becoming iCEO, that he would "milk the Mac" for all its worth. Clearly, he did just that at this so-called "Mac" World.

I feel for everyone who is let down by the lack of Mac stuff. But I guess we need to suck it up and accept the fact that Apple is not just a computer company any more. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
On the other hand, did anyone look at the stock price today? It went up $7!!! As a veteren of the times when even the most prolific MacWorlds resulted in a huge drop in value, it's astonishing to see it go up so far. I suspect the keynote was focus-grouped in front of a bunch of investors instead of the normal Mac faithful. That's fine with me. Today's stock gains will more than buy me the new iPhone and Apple TV.
Thank you Apple! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I didn't miss your point at all. I agree with you 100%. For the past two weeks I have been looking forward to going to MacWorld to check out all the new Apple and related products. Couldn't wait to see the new iLife, iWork and a development build of the new 10.5. Wow did Apple really rain on my parade! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Granted the iPhone looks absolutely amazing. I won't be buying one as long as I have to sign a 2 year contract with Cingular. No way, they are not that good.
They didn't preview any of the stuff I was really looking forward too. Oh well, there are still a few 3rd party booths I want to visit.
