I agree that iPhone looks amazing, and if it works like it's promised, then Apple may just have another blockbuster product on their hand. The thing that is most disappointing to me is tying the phone to Cingular. I've been a Sprint customer since shortly after Sprint PCS was introduced and have always had excellent service and reception. My latest addition was a wireless broadband card for my laptop PC (work computer, sadly), and it also works great. I've heard many people complain about Cingular's service and have to wonder if this is the best move for Apple, exclusively tying themselves to one provider for 2 or 3 years.
AppleTV is a product I will most likely purchase, more for its music capabilities than anything else at the moment. Currently, I have an audio system that I've invested quite a bit in, and a music collection that's the same way, and no easy way to link the two of them. If we're ever able to download HD movies/shows with Dolby Digital or DTS from iTunes, I won't ever buy another DVD.
I think that there is one point that some others have missed about this keynote. Apple has come a long way in the last 5 years. 5 years ago, a Steve Jobs keynote address got a minor mention in the "Technology" section of CNN.com. Today, the announcemnt of the iPhone was the THE top story on CNN and the NY Times after it happened. Pardon the pun, but Apple's appeal has broadened way beyond our beloved little computer company. I watched a brief clip of the keynote on CNN.com and I can't remember ever seeing that many cameras and hearing applause that loud. Macworld has become less and less about the Mac and more and more about the Mac lifestyle, in all its iterations. As such, today's keynote, while admittedly disappointing to some of us who are more interested in the newest Mac or latest OS, makes perfect sense.
One other thing that's worth noting: on January 1st, the banner on apple.com said "The first 30 years were just the beginning." Am I the only one who thinks that this is code for "We're going to have a banner year of introducing new products!"? I do think new displays are coming, I do think that a new Mac Pro with quad core is coming, I do think that a new notebook is coming...but those items do not matter as much those of us who are not Apple's core user base. The iPod, the iPhone, AppleTV; those are all items to get people to pay attention to the Mac. I hope to finish out this year saying "wow." And even though this keynote disappionted some of us, I have to say it's a good time to be a Mac user.

I was dissapointed as well. The Core of Apple for me has always been the Mac. Not the iPod, not the iPhone, not anything else apple in my life. I was hoping to hear more about 10.5, upgraded macs, new software, or a stand alone widescreen ipod. but to focus 1:20 of the Keynote for the iPhone god how craptakular is that. & the Price $599 for the 8GB model, to Quote John C Dvorak "cripes!" I got 40GB of movies, TV shows, and music do the math that Means I go to leave 32 GB of my stuff at home.
+ the name change??? I"m starting to think that one of the secret features is going to be to allow the OS to install on Crappy PC's

I want a True Widescreen iPod
Mac OS X 10.5
a New iMac

Guess all those years of the mac cult gave to steve mean nothing
have fun with people that can ditch you the second something else good luck

iToo. I really want (need) that ultralight Macbook Pro.

Did you totally miss the announcement. It's called the iPhone.

LOL, I'd agree with you 100%, but part of what makes a Macbook Pro a Pro is the graphics capabilities. If I can play Quake 4 on the iPhone, I'll gladly eat crow on this though /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
It would be nice if you can get some "lite" productivity apps, like OpenOffice lite or soemthing similar, to run on an iPhone. (iWork still doesn't cut it for me and MS will probably never trim down Office to run on an iPhone.) You might be able to run presentations from it, do some minor word processing (or at least read documents), and in some way justify it on an expense report. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"If you don't like the news, go out and make some of your own."
Jobs wanted to emphasize that Apple [ ] Inc. hits home runs. Yes, you need an ecosystem with music, creative devices, productivity stuff, etc. But increasingly, they will sell headline products with the assumption that the small stuff will just be there.
And if Apple is wrong, and something that could/should be BIG isn't part of their brand, why, just go out and code/engineer it up on your own. Free country & all that.

OK, maybe someone can tell me why I should be delighted that a phone uses Mac OSX. By and large, the software developers will be targeting their stuff to something that would work on that small interface. I don't see any major computing tasks being done on this thing. At best, it gives them a new revenue source, at worst, it will distract them from developing for real computers.
I don't own a cell, and the 2 year contract seems to means there's no inexpensive way of just using it those few times a year I need one.
I think I'll just sell my 4G iPod and buy a video iPod instead.
As for Apple TV, does it replace the need for an Airport base station, or is this yet another case of Apple screwing us for dough, this time by requiring us to buy two products just to make one functional? Lucky the 40GB HDD is just for synching content, otherwise we'd be talking about under-specced devices again.
I don't own shares in Apple, so a $7 prince jump does nothing for me.
Lastly, no Mac products at Macworld? I wait for this event each year for MAC products! The only good thing about that I guess is that at least my MacBook Pro retains its huge appeal by not having something new to which it could be compared.

Sure, Steve Jobs took the wraps off of Apple TV and the iPhone Tuesday. But think about all the things that he didn't talk about. <a href="http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/editors/2007/01/keynotereax/index.php">[more]</a>

The iPhone may look nice, but being restricted to Cingular only customers, it lost a sale to me. That meant that the Keynote speech was nearly a total waste of time. Remember the iTV, (appletv) had already been announced. The only 2 new things is the name & a little closer time frame, that is if February 2007 qualifies as a closer date.
As mentioned, the iApps should have been a given that they wouldn't be updated until Mac OS 10.5 comes out. Like others I still would liked to have been surprised with some information on them.
No mention of Leopard was the biggest surprise. After seeing that Apple took Computer out of its name is just an indication that computers, (Macs) have taken a farther back back seat to the iPod & now Apple TV & the iPhone. Apple may have said that 957 million cell phones were sold last year. The thing they did not mention was how many of these were in the $499-599 range? To make that number even smaller, how many of those were from Cingular? Maybe the new name should have been, Apple Computerless, Inc.
All of this means that I don't have to spend any money with Apple this year. For this reason I would think that Apple's stock should lower in price. But since Steve Jobs is such a good "Used Car" salesman, he will come out with a pretty new phone that will have a very, very limited group of people that with be able to use it.
No wonder I spend more money with non-Apple items for my computer system that I do for Apple items. Last year I probably spent more money with HP than I did with Apple.

Apple TV? Worlds most expensive video extension cable.

Hardly.
There are actual video cables that cost a lot more than an Apple TV. Heck, there are audio cables which cost more. That's not even considering other "remote video" devices which can also cost many times what the Apple TV unit does. It's actually a perfectly reasonable price as far as comparable devices in this market segment.
And it's not just a wireless cable - it also has a front-end for browsing media, so you can access your library without having to get up and go to the computer.

I'm disgusted.

You're disgusted? Wow, you must be a real nervous wreck. If a trade show doesn't talk about what you want them to talk about, you are actually filled with disgust?
I can't imagine if something that was actually bad or harmful happened to you. Would your head explode? Perhaps you need to get out more and live life, if such small things hurt you that much.

I would imagine that this so-called modbook and eshop.macsales will not look good in Apple's legal department. Apple certainly did not authorize this. The smell of litigation is in the air.

Why? It's not illegal to modify and resell someone else's product.
Apple might not like it, but they don't have any legal grounds to stop it - unless the company was trying to pass themselves off as Apple Computer... errr, Apple Inc. As long as it's clear that it is a third party modifying an Apple product, it will be fine.
I mean, Apple hasn't shut down those companies that will take your Apple laptop or iPod, and paint it a different colour, have they? Or those who will upgrade processors in Apple machines, or turn your iMac into a touch-screen unit.

The AppleTV looks really neat, but how well will it stream on wireless-G networks? If we have to use the n-standard, that will mean upgrading to the new Airport Extreme and probably a new Mac as well, which screws over more loyal Mac users.

It works with wired ethernet as well. Personally, I would use the wired ethernet, even though I do have an 802.11n capable Core Duo iMac. The only reason to use wireless is for laptops that move around. Seeing as the iTV just sits in the one spot all the time, there's no reason to use wireless.
That's my philosophy anyway - why use wireless when you can use wired ethernet? It's more reliable, doesn't emit microwave radiation, more secure, faster, doesn't impinge on others people, etc.

But this is the first keynote in quite a while where I didn't feel the need to run right down to the Apple store and spend some money.

You said exactly what I was thinking too. Usually I will call the store and see if they got in the new iLife or iWork and then proceed to the store to buy them both. Man this stinks! None of these products are even available today so Apple: NO SALE FOR YOU! NEXT!

We'll know Apple's in trouble when you actually like their products.
