Exactly. But it still was iDisappointment for myself and others because no such annoucement was made at this so-called "Mac" World. But it's clear that with the dropping of the "Computer" from their company name, that the "Mac" in MacWorld is likely to change. I can only hope my MacWorld magazine retains the Mac. I would no longer subscribe to an "AppleWorld" magazine, dominated by music players and downloadable video.

"Seems you're reluctant to put the onus on Macworld Expo for doing something(s) to be relevant for you. Your title for the article was right "Expo Reaction - iDisappointed"... alas, you immediately veered to blaming Apple and not Macworld Expo."
Not at all. I'm disappointed in Apple for not using Expo to introduce new Mac and OS X software products. It was only last January that Steve stood on the stage and said, basically, "But enough about the iPod because this is Macworld, right? Let's talk about Macs."
So what I'm disappointed in is that that attitude -- which is Apple's, not the show's -- lasted apparently less than a year.

"Some people do not get it. The real revolution is that the iPhone has Mac OS X inside. You have no idea what it means..."
Oh, trust me, I get it. I really do. But my disappointment had nothing to do with the phone, which OS it runs, how amazingly cool it seems to be, or even what it may do for Apple's future. I am very bullish on the phone. I think it's going to be a huge hit, and may fundamentally change Apple's business (in a good way) forever.
But none of that changes how I feel about what was presented at the keynote.

Apple TV? Worlds most expensive video extension cable.

Hardly.
There are actual video cables that cost a lot more than an Apple TV. Heck, there are audio cables which cost more. That's not even considering other "remote video" devices which can also cost many times what the Apple TV unit does. It's actually a perfectly reasonable price as far as comparable devices in this market segment.
And it's not just a wireless cable - it also has a front-end for browsing media, so you can access your library without having to get up and go to the computer.

Sure, I know that a lot of cables are absurdly overpriced. I could also have said the world's most over engineered video extension cable. All it really does it let you view your video on a larger, lower resolution monitor. I don't see the point of doing this at all, other than giving the computer companies a slice of home entertainment budget. Why should your computer be involved in the first place? This whole "convergence" thing is a myth.

That's my philosophy anyway - why use wireless when you can use wired ethernet? It's more reliable, doesn't emit microwave radiation, more secure, faster, doesn't impinge on others people, etc.

Agreed, but for people who have TVs located in another room from their Mac/PC, wireless is better than snaking cables or re-wiring. One of the big hold-ups to the non-Tivo Windows Media Center CPUs has been the I-don't-want-a-PC-in-the-TV room or the cool-looking PC media center costs way too much.
I think AppleTV is relatively cheap and good looking (we'll see how noisy it is) but transferring video via wireless-G seems dicey.

Rob, you're acting like this is the end of the world: It's not.
There's any number of reasons why products get announced at a certain time (legal and marketing concerns being perhaps the most common), and there's nothing that says new Mac gear WON'T be announced next month. Steve said it'll be a good year for Mac (computers), and I don't doubt it.
There WILL be a Santa-Rosa-based update to the MBP, there WILL be new machines based on Intel's latest and greatest chips, Leopard will be released, etc. Not a question of IF, but WHEN. I seriously doubt development resources were diverted from the desktop/laptops to aid development of the iPhone/AppleTV.
Bottom line: Apple is now more successful, more diversified than ever, and is partnering with other large/successful companies (Paramount, Disney, Cingular, gasp!, did I just say that?) in order to not just survive on a shoe-string, but to THRIVE, to be in the driver's seat controlling the interactions and determining the direction of future products we all will be using. I'd rather have Jobs' vision of how products operate rather than the CEO from some other company (Microsoft), as I can be assured the device will be compatible with my Mac stuff. Maybe some of the recent recruits take it for granted, but compatibility with OS X means ALOT to me.... And yes, it all stems from having a Mac OS X-based computer in the "hub", as the centerpiece of the system. You seriously don't think Apple is scuttling the Mac, do you? Come on....
I don't know why you guys aren't more excited (or bright enough) to see how this is good!! Do you actually WANT Apple to remain a small-potatoes DIY company making computers in a garage, as an 'also-ran', just a tiny 'blip' on the market radar screen? It's waaayyy too late to return to THAT.

If you're happy with a G3 and whatever OS is running on it, by all means... enjoy it for a few months until Leopard comes out. When Leopard comes out, whatever hardware is out now will blow the doors off your G3.

I'm not happy with the G3 (it plays Reader Rabbit for the Kids!), but I'm also not happy that Adobe doesn't have native apps yet. So, as you can see, I am waiting on two fronts.

Rob read my mind. I was just as disappointed. The Keynote was an announcement that Apple wasn't ready to release anything today. The iPhone? June. Apple tv? February. The only reason they announced the iPhone today was media pressure. When was the last time they announced something six months early? (Apple tv fka iTV was announced in September, five months prior to its scheduled February release.)

"Rob, you're acting like this is the end of the world: It's not."
End of the world? Hardly. I wrote that I was disappointed:
Quote:

Disappointed: Sad or displeased because someone or something has failed to fulfill one's hopes or expectations

That's all. Disappointed. Not the end of the world, not "OMG Apple doesn't know WTF they're doing," and not "they're killing the platform!" As I wrote, many times now, I love the iPhone. I think the fact that it runs OS X is awesome (though we'll see how open they allow the platform to be). I understand the implications on their business. I see where this can take them. Trust me, I know it's got the potential to be business-changing.
But none of that can change the fact that I am personally disappointed that they chose to show no new Mac-related hardware or software during the keynote.

The iPhone IS a new computer. It's smaller than the smallest laptop that apple ships... but is almost as functional. This is a VERY impressive smart phone. My only disappointment is that Cingular is the ONLY company that's going to be carrying it.

Reportedly a stripped down OS that won't accept apps to run on the phone/computer. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Yeah, it's the "State of the Union Address" and the President comes out and talks about an awsome new Video/Media Player and an amazingly great cell phone. That's amazingly great and awsome Mr. President, I'll join you in getting one, but this is the "State of the Union Address" can I hear something about the state of the Union ... other than "This is a great year for the Union." /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
