iPod nano not registering played songs in update

So, I have an iPod nano (1g) and mac os x 10.4.8 with iTunes 7.0.2. You'd think everything would be fresh and up to date. But sometimes I play songs on the nano and these plays are not registered in iTunes when I connect the ipod to the computer. I can't figure out any difference between the times it does register and the times it doesn't. It's pretty random (I'd say maybe 30% of the time the plays don't get registered). I'd like 100% of the songs to be registered. Any tips?
Also, I have the podcast settings set so that selected played podcasts will be removed from the ipod automatically. but, itunes seems to like to take off podcasts that i am in the middle of listening to, which is highly annoying.
