Excellent News! I have been following the Uru development since around 2001 when it had the code names of D.I.R.T. , mudpie and parable. Even though I have to run some other Windows only applications on my Windows partition it will be a pleasure to finally play this game natively on OSX.

No. Cider is essentially a wrapper around the Windows executable to enable it to run on the Mac. It's an outgrowth of Cedega, TransGaming's similar technology for Linux, and a long-ago descendant of the WINE (WINE Is Not an Emulator) Project.
It's not exposing any system-level code in Mac OS X to virus or malware infection or anything like that.

That's correct, and that's partly why it's perfect for GameTap. It was resurrected about six months ago by GameTap after lying dormant for nearly two years. GameTap's specialty is in resurrecting arcade and PC favorites that have largely gone by the wayside, and it's the only place online where you can play many of them legally without resorting to ROMs and such.
At 99 cents a month to play, GameTap's a very different consumer value proposition than the MMORPG fees that Ubi Soft was charging to play Uru Live during its first run. What's more, this isn't a dead, static world -- it's in active development, and they're opening up new areas.

Oh, cool. I'll definitely take a look at that. I never joined the original online version but I still have a copy of Uru for the PC gathering dust somewhere.
I have about a dozen more or less obscure suggestions for games they could resurrect - I wonder if they take requests... Sanitarium, Anachronox, Project Eden, ... Basically, games I never got around to finishing before "advances" in Windows made them unplayable.
