connecting a livebox broadband router

Hi there,
I am trying to connect a mac which is running mac os 9.2.1 to a livebox broadband router. I know the router is working because it is currently connected to a boring windows PC. the mac only mentions a PPP server, whereas the livebox talks about a dhcp server. should I try to connect the mac via usb or lan cable?
