PlayStation 3 price cut pulls down Sony profits

It's not a good sign when your previous generation product outsells your next generation product. And it's not an out-of-stock issue either. Playstation 3s are available everywhere.
I think Sony made the mistake of appealling to those who were interested in the specs above everything else. When you do that, you have to remain the spec leader. A console just can't do that. Only a PC can do that with it's numerous upgradeable components. This is the reason people aren't flocking to the PS3. It costs as much as a PC, and a PC is a whole lot more upgradeable.
It's a shame too, because the PS3 is a nice product. I just don't see what it offers for the price. My Nintendo Wii costs less than half that of a PS3 and it's rejuvinated my interest in console video games.

Peter, I was thinking the same thing. A casual stroll through Best Buy reveals Blue-Ray players ranging from $800=$1400. If you want some beautiful content to go up on your huge, new flat screen plasma or LCD, you better have yourself a Blue-Ray disc player. And if it can play video games, great ones at that, it's a fantastic deal...

I have an HDTV, and bought the PS3 partly because of the low cost yet high quality Blu-Ray player inside. I think Blu-Ray will eventually win the format war. I think Sony considers this one of its biggest features. The PS2 was one of the first low cost DVD players in Japan (not so much in the US where the players were already getting popular) and that sold a LOT of units. They are trying the same thing here and I believe it will work.
In addition, my PS2 was on its last legs, and I have dozens of PS2 and PS1 games which I didn't want to just throw out. Now I can continue to play them. I think this compatibility is also a consideration for many.
As far as its Internet connectivity, it is terrible. Not the hardware, btu the software. Terrible web browser, not so hot online store, and so on. But this can improve through software upgrades.

You cannot compare the Wii to the Playstation 3. Thats like comparing a Jetta to a Mercedes.
The Wii is a family oriented video game platform. The XBox 360, and the PS3 are gaming platforms with home entertainment capabilities.
As far a price goes most people have fallen into the Dell -vs- Macintosh trap. They see a $400 Dell and the $1,000 Mac and assume that Dells are cheaper than Macs. Although after one specs out the Dell to equal the Macintosh they find the Mac in some cases is actually cheaper.
The Playstaion 3 and XBox are headed for the same argument. Yes the Xbox is cheeper out of the box. However, once you add the 60 gb... oops thats not available... once you add the 20 gb hard drive, the HD DVD add-on, the wireless network adaptor, and the PC running Widows Media Center you find the Playstation 3 can be quite a bit cheaper.
It all depends in what you are looking for. If you are looking to spend a enjoyable hour or two with the kids playing games that the entire family can play then by a Wii... I did. If you are looking for a home entertainment system that plays games, movies, music, and will become a entry level digital hub then buy a Playstation 3.

One other reason to buy a Wii though...it gets people up of their lazy @$$es and forces them to MOVE to play their games.

And that's why I wont be buying one. After a long hard days work I'd like to have a seat, relax, and play some games not jump around like a headless chicken.

Sony cut have kill the PS2, them it cannot outsell the PS3. But it like Apple killing the iMac went introduce the Mac Pro. And this past Christmas the PS2 outsells all consoles together, the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3. But it only to have products at 2 different prices points.

People forget that the Playstation outsold the PS2 for a very long time.
Sony was very smart to include Blue-Ray and a hard drive standard on every PS3. Two years from now, the games for the PS3 will be a generation ahead of Xbox 360 and two generations ahead of Wii.
This is a marathon, not a sprint. The PS3 is a very, very cool console that has some great features and it will come down in price in time.

Although Sony's core business more than doubled profits in the last quarter of 2006, the company's PlayStation 3 caused Sony's Computer Entertainment business unit to register a loss. [more]

The only thing I'll buy from Sony over the next year will be a PS3. I will never ever buy a Sony TV, camcorder, DVD/Blue-Ray player, or digital camera from Sony again.
Why? Because their quality control sucks total a$$.

My experience has been hit or miss. I replaced a Sony receiver with an Onkyo unit and never looked back, but over Christmas I picked up a Sony 5.1 stereo system that works great. My PS2 started acting as my DVD player after our Sony DVD player died, and it's given us about four years of good use with no problems (outside of me having to clean the dust and schmutz out of it a few weeks ago).
