I've heard of this before, but does anyone know a solution to prevent my 20" iMac from sleeping regardless of the energy saver settings? Right now it appears to sleep after 10 minutes of non use, when I have it set to sleep never.

Hi
Sounds to me like a hardware malfunction. More specifically, a component is actually overheating or at least the iMac thinks one is. My guess based on the information.
I'd either give Apple a call or bring it into an Apple Store, especially if it is easily reproducible.
