Part of the music on the iPod was purchased from the iTunes store and stored on a G4 portable. We bought a Macbook and moved everything to the Macbook including iTune.
Charging the iPod ends up with a deleted music because the Macbook's iTune deletes everything including CD music from the iPod. "Macbook not authorized." Do I have to go and buy a charger? This is the pits!

Hi
Authorize your new MacBook in iTunes -- Should be under the Advanced menu -- and copy all of the files / playlists / ... to the MacBook. iTunes will have everything the same if you also copy the iTunes Library files from the Music folder within your user folder. Otherwise, you can import them but you would lose your previous playlists and played count. All should be perfectly fine the next time you connect it.

iTunes is a wonder database for music that is way above anything I could have hoped for. It is a dream come through. The iTunes store protection against pirating is way above anything I can accept. I will buy the actual CD's the songs I bought from the iTunes store are on and then delete those from the iTunes store.
Buying even one song is enough and sufficient to cause despicable problems from Apple that up to the innovation of the iTunes store was the most user friendly software company ever. To say that I am disappointed in Apple is putting it mildly. I have been an Apple fanatic ever since the Apple II.

Hi
I have no 'real' gripes with it. Would I rather not have it? Of course. It's mainly the record labels' fault.

I deleted all the iTunes store purchased music from the Macbook. Then I connected my wife's iPod to it to charge it. No dice! Apple could have provided a simple additional choice but didn't: CHARGE.
I am so disappointed! I feel like screaming. The iPod is synched with another iTunes library and because of this I can't charge it on this computer. Apple has descended to the lowest level of unfriendliness. At least I remember when Apple was it but it is so long ago. Too bad!

Wow so upset over such a small problem... They do make AC chargers for iPods - I'm surprised you don't just plug the iPod into the wall to charge it... -or- make a new dummy account and then charge it under that account. -or- get a car charger (doesn't everyone have one of those by now?).

Vow I am surprised that you would accept this attitude. A company that morphed from almost a family member into a controlling freak. We have a charger because we could not charge the iPods on this computer we use for traveling. It is not the need to have an extra charger that upsets me. It is the Apple's attitude toward us who stuck it out when times were tough for Apple. Apple squanders the enormous pool of good will created years ago. No wonder Apple is sued in Europe precisely on the iTunes freak control.

You live a sheltered life. Go over to napster and look at their requirements -
System Requirements: PC Only, Windows Vista/XP/2000, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.1 or higher, Windows Media Player 7.1 or higher, Internet connectivity Note: Windows Vista or XP and Windows Media Player 10 or higher are required to use the Napster To Go service. *Subscription Service not available in all countries. It is necessary to maintain a subscription in order to continue access to songs downloaded through Napster.
Did you read the part that says if your subscription lapses the songs stop playing?
Is this what you want - something like this to happen to us?

Who cares about what the other guys are doing or suffering! The Mac was until not that long ago the easiest, the friendliest OS. For everything you can go from Mac to Mac and do whatever you need to do except for iTunes and iPod. I read that Job said it was because of the music companies. In most part he is right. To get the right to sell music he has to dance to their tune. But how hard would have it been to add a command to charge only when connecting any iPod to any Mac? It shows a not caring attitude toward the users starting to permeate Apple. I have rejected Apple's Aperture because it is too complicated, too power hungry, too slow and instead bought Adobe's Lightroom because it is simple to use, fast just like an Apple app should be and always used to be. I mourn the old days of Apple. "Sheltered life"?
You ass ume much!

Can't you read what I posted? iTunes should have a command that charging only as an added option. Why is everybody accepting everything coming from apple like lemmings? There is no reason to not allow users the convenience to charge iPods. If we do not scream when it hurts how is Apple going to know it has to change it's ways?

Isn't it obvious? Maybe someone in here can change the situation and find a way to get us to connect iPod's to any Mac for charging only. Does it make sense to you that only in one case users are controlled and hampered unnecessarily? We are asleep while the EU is going to force Apple to mend it's ways, not a moment too soon.

Does this message popup?
Each time you connect, iPod automatically downloads the music library stored on it. When you connect iPod to a different computer, iTunes will inform you that iPod is linked to a different iTunes library and will ask whether you wish to erase iPod's contents and sync with the new computer's library.
-----------------------
-and if you answer no won't the ipod just charge? Bear in mind that some USB devices don't carry enough current to charge the iPod e.g. a 3rd party USB HUB that is not powered.

OK this is what I did. I just connected the ipod to the Macbook. The iPod icon came in view. The message from iTunes with the choices of sinc and cancel. I chose cancel. The icon of the iPod is gone. Oh boy! I am with egg all over my face.
The iPod is now charging like it should. Apple! I prostrating my self in front of great God Job hoping for forgiveness. (I am 72 under some stress at this time but it is no excuse for screwing up like that) The orange light! I had not noticed it! Thank you for straightening me out. Apple I still love you!
