I'm using 10.4.8 on an iMacG5PPC 2Ghz/2GB. Started my usual routine of running Cocktail and then DW to defrag my HD. Graph showed only 3% out of place files but I record music so I defrag regularly. Did boot rom DW CD the program ran fine but stalled on step 8 of rebuilding drive. Used PC and went to Alsoft's site to see if there was a FAQ and noticed that there's now a DW4. As a registered owner of DW3 I thought I'd get emailed when a new version was out. FAQ was'nt conclusive so I emailed their support. I did a cold stop/start on the Mac and was able to start DW again from CD and it ran until step 5 and hung again. After that my Mac ignores any attempt to boot from CD and I am in admin. I went back online to Alsoft and posted second email and also ordered DW4 upgrade. No email from Alsoft has shown up yet and saw a post on Mac911 about 3.03. So I'm adding my 2 cents here and seeking help. The Mac's running fine and the HD shows 3% files out of place as before. What's causing the OS to Not recognize DW's CD?

are you running APE?
and it's not the hard drive that gets defragged...it's only the directory.

DiskWarrior Support emailed me with instructions to wash & dry disk with mild soap & water and try again. The first time it did'nt run so I went into Preferences/Start Up Disk and in that box along with my Mac's HD was DiskWarrior Mac OSX CD and I chose that and restarted using Target Disk Mode. It took longer but it did finally boot from the CD and 3.03 succesfully ran.
Thankyou.
This is Amit Singh's observations on what are or are not file/fork fragmentation. He has his disclaimers on his lack of large statistical sample and that this is based on Panther on this page as well.

read that before, it's a nice read.
but DW only works on the directory, not the files.
so it's not a true defrag in the sense that it rewrites each file in a continuous write.
only the directory is taken care of.
