I'm looking for some shareware/freeware that can help me convert a bitmap document (a photo) into vector based one, so, it can be opened in Illustrator or other vector capable program.
I can't afford to purchase commercial conversion program so if someone can help me with a tip how to find such
bitmap to vector converting shareware/freeware I'be very very very thankful!

I vaguely remember that in the past I found one such freeware program, but it converted bitmaps of line art (not photos) into vector art, I don't currently have it installed and I don't recall the name of it. But at least something similar to what you seek does exist... or did just a few years ago.

What version of Illustrator do you have? The demo on this one works for 10 conversions if I remember correctly.
They had an older version that worked in Illy 10 as well.
Vektor Forge

There is an OSX converter to but unless you have a Dual G5 or better it's to slow to be of use.

Do you have Illustrator yourself? It has a tracing tool, and it got a lot better in CS2. You plop the bitmap in, and it has many options for conversion.

Graphic Converter is a paint program, more like Photoshop than Illustrator. It doesn't do raster to vector conversion. A simple tracing tool has been available in Illustrator since version 6 as I recall. The VektorForge plug in is more like Streamline and as Moose and Squire pointed out Illy CS2 had a dynamite tracing tool built in, called Live Trace.

I would second this. Just had an identity project--scanned the drawings, adjusted the levels, imported into Illustrator. Tried about two of the Live Trace filters, and then excellent results...
