Not really happy with the email program that comes with the iMac. I like Microsoft Outlook Express.
What choices are there for the Mac?

Personally I just pass everything through Gmail. No muss, no fuss. However, you have other options such as Thunderbird or if you are stuck in your Microsoft ways then you might want to look at Entourage. The difference is Thunderbird is 100% free and like all Mozilla products works fantastically. Entourage is a bit more on the iffy side and it costs money. Also, depending on how new you are to the Mac world you might not know this yet but Microsoft's Mac products are infamous for their lack of support and updates.
If you want a stand-alone program, get Thunderbird. Otherwise I'd do what I do and go through Gmail.

FWIW--I use Entourage, and it works well for me. I also use, as an added layer of spam protection, the add-on SpamSieve. I believe it runs about $25-30, with free updates periodically. Works very well.
I went to Entourage because of dissatisfaction with Apple's Mail, and also after a trial with another mail program, MailSmith, which left me cold. (Been long enough now I don't recall why, though.) I've not tried Thunderbird, primarily on the basis of the don't-fix-it-if-it-aint-broke principle, though it gets generally good reviews. When I next change email client software, I will very likely give Thunderbird a go.
Best of luck

Smart mailboxes and instant search alone make Apple's Mail a terrific program. What features exactly are you looking for that you can't find in Mail?

-Hi,
Been using Netscape's built-in browser mail for some time. But have been giving Thunderbird a test drive for a couple months now. Back and forth...Its a pretty good mail client and if an Intel Mac ever comes this way I'll go for the T-Bird mail since its Universal and Netscape will be history at this end. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I once had an Apple IIE with a PC Transporter card and had to sign on to a BBS while emulating DOS, then translate everything back to Apple to be able to read a message. So I have seen email programs come and go. Then when I put Office 2001 on my Mac, I went to Entourage and found that to meet all my needs. Now I bought a MacBook and have finally moved from OS9.2 to OSX 10.4.9 and I am using the Apple Mail program with SPAMSieve. I agree with the last post that the Smart Folders alone make this worth while, and syncing through .Mac--what more do I need??

Hi-
IMHO, Thunderbird seems to be a fairly good choice, especially now that it's supported by SpamSieve! Really nice. Good luck.

Well to tell the truth part of the problem is that I left Appleland when my OS9 iMac died and so I am going through "figuring out pains".
I am gradually figuring out how the systems work, but I cannot figure out what the point of Smart mailboxes is.
Also I want to have the messages open up below when they are selected up top so I can preview them.
Also what is a Smart Address?

Don't know about Smart Addresses but I'd guess they group any e-mail address from a URL. So say everyone [name]@apple.com would be put in a folder or group. Smart folders work the same way, take any mail from certain people or groups and automatically put them together... Things like that.

gawd I hate letting someone I DON"T want to know where I am learn my location when the preview downloads images in the preview pane.

btw.... I still like the Eudora (Eudorka as some know it ) email app.
it's still being maintained, and still being updated, although as I use mail for OS X, I haven't run it for a while

There is a "Bounce" button on the "Mail" that allows you to /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
"return to sender,
bah do be do be do,
address unknown,
ba do be do be,....
giving the impression you are non existant. Correct me if I am wrong on this one as I am not completely sure. I just assumed that that is what it is for.

the bounce gives the impression it is not a valid email address.
my complaint about the preview is when you open an email with images, not all are there until you open it.
when you open it, it loads images from the senders site of choice which can let them know should they be monitoring, where those images were loaded to... as in your IP address.
when you have the preview pane open, it loads images.
if you do NOT have preview pane and are required to open your email in a separate window...as in double click it or click once and OPEN, the images aren't loaded until you open it.
so as you peruse your lengthy list of daily email which even with the best of filters has some spam get through, you don't have to worry about accidently having preview open an email you don't want.
after all, to click on it to bounce/delete it, it will have already opened in the preview pane in hte time you click on it to the time you bounce or delete.
thus, you just shot yourself in the IP.
it's also not a good thing on a windows box as it's the fastest way to have "stuff" you don't really want in your box. so on the PC side, the risks are 2X

How do you get a "read receipt" in the "Mail" program ?
In Outlook you request one individually or if you always want one you can put it in the preferences. I use it ocassionally in Outlook if I need to know that my email was received.
