I have a connect through a DSL modem and a Linksys router. I dont need the router connected any more but if i take it off line and connect directly to the modem I cannot connect to the internet. I have tried unplugging the modem and starting it up but still no go. As soon as I plug in the router and run through it I have a connection. What do I need to do to make this work without the router?

I'm not sure why you're so eager to rid yourself of the router. It gives you a layer of protection.
That said, sometimes DSL and Cable modem need to be off for some arbitrary amount of time to release their association with a particular MAC address.

Another item to look at is whether you still have your computer set to get it's IP (is the router acting as the DHCP server) from the router.
Since you are removing the router (echoing the previous comment, why), the computer must use the DSL vendors settings, whatever they are. I have also found that the DSL vendor/ISP are very literal and extremely unforgiving when you are not set up exactly as they specify.
