However still expensive for LCD Montiors..
The Samsung SyncMaster 225BW Widescreen LCD Monitor features: ultra-wide 9:5 aspect ratio and 1680 x 1050 resolution, Fast 5 ms response time, 700:1 contrast ratio and 160-degree viewing angles. $222 for 22" widescreen.
Dell 20"
E207WFP 20-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD w/ DVI $259.
Are Apple LCDs that much better?
Just a curiosity

New display announcements must be near. I'm guessing models with iSight cameras since the external camera's demise. I know, a no brainer.
Cheers!

The price drops are nice, but I still see the Apple LCDs as very overpriced without a clear quality difference supporting the high price. I think there are comparable or better displays available from other vendors at lower prices and my wallet does my talking. It wasn't always this way, but a lot has changed in LCDs over the last two or three years that makes them far more viable for serious color work where accuracy to the file is important to the work being done.

If you want the exact same monitor and can accept non-apple packaging, get the Dell 30". It's even cheaper.

No.
I researched this myself awhile ago and what I found is that the guts of the Dell monitors and Apple monitors are the same. The only differences were the ports available and the look. Oh, and the Dell monitors were significantly cheaper.

Still 779 for the 23" in the UK. Plug that into XE.com and see how it all adds up.

Some additional features I'd like to see:
Dual DVI inputs for connecting 2 computers.
Ability to rotate monitor to portrait orientation.
User replaceable dvi, usb, firewire, and power cables so you don't have to ship out the entire monitor just for a broken cable.

It is my understanding that Dell sources internals for their displays from a number of suppliers. It can be very difficult to be certain that the display you are purchasing does in fact have the internals you are looking for.
That said, our company has had good experience with the HP 2335 and HP-LP2465 displays. More affordable than the Apple displays, and comparable quality. At one point, they apparently used the same internals as Apple, but I don't know if this is still the case.

Apple's monitors always score high on color quality. I appreciate the one cable from the computer to the monitor that carries the power, monitor connection, firewire and USB. I fully expect Apple to sell monitors with iSight, speakers and microphone. Additionally, these monitors are great to look at and compliment your Mac like no other. The 23" is known to have had color issues. I have the 20" and can't be happier. Lastly, if you buy AppleCare with your MacPro, it also covers your Apple Display as part of the deal. That represents a huge value and a big incentive to go Apple all the way.

The "guts" may be the same, but that doesn't make the displays equivalent. Keep in mind that Apple's displays are SWOP-certified. They're designed for people who need color accuracy, whereas Dells are designed for value. (Don't get me wrong; I've got three Dell displays here in my office, so I obviously like their value. But if I were looking for color accuracy, I wouldn't be using them.)

I completely concur with Dan on this one. Apple displays have that old SWOP certification and color accuracy that goes above and beyond. My old original 22" Cinema Display from the first line of Apple flat panels is still going strong, everything sharp and crisp and no squinting, no compromise with quality. Pay a few hundred more and get the best, which will last and you'll never be disappointed with it.
If your job doesn't require excellent color reproduction, photo or video work or design work, get anything you want. As a designer, I ALWAYS go with Apple monitors. You can't beat 'em.
