I love Microsoft Word's Notebook layout for taking notes. It's simple bullet point form easily organizes my thoughts into an easy to follow format. I also love the ability to record audio as I do it. However, on my MacBook the PPC orginins of the program make it a little laggy and really annoying at times. Are there any free alternatives to this that are similar to Word Notebook?

Hi
Try OmniOutliner, it might work for you. I know it has a audio recording function, also it is very simple to use.

Second OmniOutliner. So elegantly simple. Doesn't it come bundled with MacBooks?

Whenever the discussion turns to the topic of Microsoft Word, there is the potential for a riot, because one's choice of word processor is like a religious decision. Also, many folks hate Microsoft. And Word, while easy to use, is not at all intuitive to learn to use. For the latter reason, many folks are very frustrated with Word.
While many folks have the same problem that you are having regarding Word's performance, this is easily fixed.
Word is jam-packed with automated features. By default, when you install Word almost all of them are enabled. Think of the default installation of Word as you would having seven or eight applications open and running simultaneously. The way to reclaim the performance that is being sapped is to turn off features that you don't need, or which you don't need running constantly.
The problem that many users face is that you don't turn off all of Word's advanced features in Word's preferences. The place to turn off auto-correction features is in your Tools menu.
Turn off the worthless grammar checker in Preferences.
In Preferences --> View --> Window turn off (uncheck) Live Word Count
Then go to Tools --> AutoCorrect... and turn off all of the automated features that you don't want to use.
Just turning off these few features will make Word fly!
I sometimes run Word v.X on an old Blue G3, and it has no lag at all, and I leave a bunch of features turned on all the time, and I always work in Page Layout mode.
I hope that this allows you to continue to use Word and enjoy its note-taking features without being frustrated by performance problems.
