Can anyone recommend to me what an inexpensive way would be to utilize the surround sound ability of my iMac? I want to feed the optical out connector into an amplifier, but most amplifiers are big and unsightly. Is there a small amplifier that someone can recommend to me? I am not looking for huge sound, this will be for the occasional game playing and otherwise watching DVDs on my iMac.

Personally, I've used Logitech's Z-5450 to great success.

These days, there are some receivers that are available in silver, which may be more in tune with your Mac. If you are looking for basic surround sound, there are some receivers that aren't that bulky.
That being said, you also could just hide the receiver away in an audio cabinet, so long as it has good ventilation for cooling.
The great thing is, there are so many options offering 7.1 and 6.1 surround that you can pick up a 5.1 receiver for a real steal. If you are just going to use it for games and such you don't need that much power.
