Are you just going to write up invoices for customers, or are you tracking receivables with these invoices? A word processing program can be set up as a template for making up invoices if all you want to do is print one. If you want to track who's paid and who hasn't, though, you'll need a more comprehensive accounting program of some sort.

You might check out this freeware called Little Office
I haven't used it, but it's free and has some good reviews on Version Tracker.

I know I could be more high-tech about it, but I created a simple Appleworks Invoice. each time I write up a new invoice, It is saved as a new document in my "Unpaid Invoices" folder. When an invoice gets paid, I drag it to my "paid invoices" folder. Simple, but effective.

I just created a drawing doc in appleworks and used lined to make sections. I added text to certain areas where I would always be entering info and saved the file to use as a blank form.
It was a very archaic approach, but it works for a very simple invoice.

I use Excel. It's easy to make a form that looks pretty good with titles, names addresses and so on. Use borders and lines to divide it up and make it pretty. You can link your invoice sheet with a worksheet with your hours and rates and have the weekly, monthly or total show up in the right place in your invoice. You could also make a separate sheet to keep a record of when you send the invoice and when it's paid. An actual invoice program would probably make it more convenient, but I don't have one.
