IPOD and Itunes music library

I have had an IPOD since 2005 and have over 10000 songs stored in an Itunes library on my desktop PC and backed up on a portable hard drive. I have also used someone elses laptop to add songs to my IPOD, causing me to have more songs on my IPOD than in the Itunes library on my PC and Hard drive backup. I am unable to open the back up Itunes file on my Mac to add the songs to the Itunes library on it. I can connect my Ipod to the Mac and play them over Itunes in that manner, but I would very much like to transfer the songs from my IPOD to my Mac Itunes library. I know if I attempt to sync my Itunes Library on my Mac, I will loose all of the songs on the IPOD and be stuck with only the few songs now on my Macs Itunes Library. Is there any way to transfer the songs from the IPOD to the Itunes Library?
