USB Turntables?

An online acquaintance just mentioned that he got a USB turntable to use for converting vinyl to MP3s so he can burn them to CD. This sounds like a project I'm interested in doing; I don't have a stereo, so this would be a low-cost means of connecting a turntable to my iMac (or the MacBook). We have a lot of rare recordings that will never make it to CD commercially, as does my husband's family -- I'd love to do some conversions.
Has anyone had any experience with USB turntables, and can sing the praises or steer me away from particular models?
