iCal Date Hack?

Anyone know if there is a way to hack iCal so that even when it's not running it still shows the correct date in your dock?
I hate that it's stuck on Jul 17th when not running.

There isn't. Each application is in charge of its own icon in the dock.

But, you've got to keep your hard drive active, and my Macbook is usually asleep.

Right, and it's just launching iCal and then quitting. You might as well leave it running.
