Yes to both. I never use the corkboard (the binder and outliner are plenty without it), and recent versions of Scrivener allow you to set whatever background you want.

Scrivener is also useful for research scientists who have to write research papers or review articles. Very good for keeping track of multiauthor articles because everyone can see at a glance where their contribution fits in.
The only disadvantage is that I have to assemble the final article in Word because my references are kept in Endnote.
