I cant burn an Audio CD from iTunes. After going through the preliminary steps including Checking media and Initializing, it starts to write the first song, then Cancels, then a warning box comes up which says,
The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
Yet the burner has no problem burning data disks from the Finder. And it can even rip Audio CDs into iTunes.
I have unsuccessfully tried 2 brands of 52x CD-Rs. I vaguely remember the last time I tried burning from iTurnes (it was a few years ago !!) it worked fine, but I think I used slower blanks. Could this be the problem? Any ideas?

Couple possibilities:
What is your burn speed? See iTunes/Prefs/Advanced/Burning
8X is the max for that drive. Some older optical drives choke on
discs rated higher than they can burn. Most new ones just max
at the burner speed for higher-X discs.
If that drive didn't come with your Mac, you may need to get
Patchburn for iTunes to see it. Check you System Profiler to
see if burning is supported. That's under hardware/ATA. You
can get PatchBurn for Panther here:

Thanks for the tip. PatchBurn worked out very well for me, but not at all for the reason we were looking for.
The internal CD burner now wont burn even from the Finder. Either PatchBurn screwed it or coincidentally it is declining into a gradual failure mode.
BUT I just made an impulse purchase of a Kanguru (yeh, thats the way they spell it) Firewire/USB DVD burner. Even though it was listed as completely Mac compatible, it wouldnt burn CDs and the System Profiler said burning was not supported.
PatchBurn fixed all that and the Kanguru now rockets through both iTunes and Finder burns far faster than the internal drive ever did.
I have no idea if the Kanguru wil burn DVDs on this old G4, but it will be a great second drive for my next Mac (when I finally get around to upgrading).
