I thought Microsoft was going to discontinue Office on the Macintosh? Oh, that was just a 1997 memo.

In related news, Microsoft is suing the Microsoft Mac Business Unit for patent infringement.

Without a cross-platform Excel scripting system, I could really care less about any Office offering.
In response, I am now working on converting over all such systems to open-source.

What about the news they're dropping VBA in this release. What will that mean for 2004-created Macros, and how will we be able to create new Excel macros?

You won't, and you're out of luck. I'm planning on continuing to use Office 2004, though I may try Open Office/NeoOffice, which now supposedly supports Excel macros (I haven't tested it yet).

Guess this is the last one.
I will make do with 2004 Professional meanwhile.
I do not even bother with the updates now.
The good news is that MBU folks seem to have access to jobs up North.

While I'm glad that Microsoft is working so hard on the next release in order to provide us with a universal binary version of their code, it's a shame that it comes at the expense of VBA compatibility.
Isn't there a sense of irony that the free, NeoOffice, is already a universal binary, already has XML support and also retains VBA compatibility? It may have a few interface quirks, but for me, it's already a better alternative. In my opinion, Microsoft really shot itself in the foot with the decision to drop VBA support in the next office release. Creating spreadsheets with this functionality is one thing, using existing spreadsheets with this functionality is another and applies to a much larger audience.

Open Office etc., is not worth the hassle considering that MS do not require proof of status when buying/validating the Education Version.
Office is now a commodity and deserves to be milked as it has milked us in the past.

I am so glad I don't need or relay on this crap. I could not care if they end up calling it Office 2010 or 2020. Adobe already released all the software I need to make my living in UB. I could not care less what happens to Microsoft. With vitalization this makes having a native version of Office for the Mac a non-issue. Apple should finally step in and offer an Office killer, now that it no longer fears Microsoft. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why would anyone consider Office 2008? They have not gotten Office 2004 to work correctly yet. Their recent patches have screwed up existing Office 2004 so badly that it has to be reinstalled.
I'm going for NeoOffice which could not be worse! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

As if M$ has sold any copies of Office 2007. Since no one will be upgrading to the new Office on either platform, I wouldn't worry to much about this pending upgrade.
