As opposed to opening a new thread on the subject, I'll ask my question in this one: Does anyone think that the iPhone once released will be able to be tethered to a laptop in order to use it's internet capabilities? Either through Bluetooth or physical USB? I know that all, if any, response to this question would be speculation at best until the iPhone is actually released, but has anyone heard anything about the iPhone being able to do so?

No speculation needed: Apple's website says the iPhone will be able to use any available wi-fi network for internet connection/e-mail, etc.
Of course, most laptops don't have internet capability on their own: do you mean your laptop has a USB/PCMCIA/Express Card EVDO modem or the like? If so, then yes: you can use the EVDO modem with the laptop to share that internet connection with an iPhone, using system preferences (see Internet & Network', 'Sharing', then 'Internet' to share using Airport).

I spent $250 on a 30GB iPod so I can have my tunes on tap. I spent $350 on a Windows Mobile smartphone so that I can have mobile internet when I need it. That was almost two years ago and I think an update to my current system wouldn't be out of line. An iPhone would cost the same as if I were to do it all over again. Plus, both the iPod and phone are in good condition and I think I can score some money off them on eBay or something. I only use about 5 or 6 GB for my music and rarely use it for video. I used the remainder of the iPod's drive for mobile storage but that task has been taken over my my 100GB OWC drive. So, the only thing I need left is internet, which I hear is way better than what my T-Mobile MDA can do. It was a pain to get it synced with my mac since Mark/Space hadn't came out with a Mobile 5 version yet, and because of the iPhone's ability to surf and navigate the net with ease, using it to share the connection with my portable would be greatly reduced. Still, there will be a time when I'm away from a hotspot and need more than the iPhone's capabilities, hence my question. But then, only Jobs himself knows at this point.

I think the i-Phone looks sweet , but too me they need more memory ... What i mean is they compare the Price tag to a 4GB and 8 GB Nano . Witch the 8GB and the 30GB iPods are the same price tags . Im one that uses my iPod for viewing video on the go , yet even with 8GBs i wouldnt be able to put any videos on there at this point .
I have about 7GBs of Music right now in my 30GB iPod , 2GBs of family Pictures that i take with me so i could show off my daughter , wife and other family members off to my friends , LOL . About 15GBs of video is also on my iPod and thats not even my Music videos . I also have a small portion of it for my Address Book and Calabor section .
S for someone like me a 30 and 80 GB iPhone would have been a better offer at this point in time over a 4 or 8 GB . Yet i still have high hopes for a Widescreen iPod that offers a little more then what the iPods have today .
maybe some Wireless action to sync with my MacBook Pro , some BlueTooth as well and maybe even the Camera option for on the go . As well as Safari for when your at home or out and have that WiFi too look up something really fast . the Phone part itself could be taken out and keep all other features for the next Gen iPod . I would even pay 50 to 60 dollors extra for an iPod like that .

Apple has stated, here on Macworld and elsewhere, that you will not be able to tether the iPhone to your laptop to use it as a modem. AFAIK every EDGE/3G phone AT&T (Cingular) sells can be used as a modem to connect to the internet through the data network except for the iPhone.
I would not be surprised if they use this as a selling point for iPhone 2.0, but for now you are restricted to non-Apple smartphones if you want EDGE/3G access to the internet.
