I downloaded a tv show via Bits on wheels and it completed fine. However when i try to open it with quicktime it says 'Error opening movie' and when i try with VLC it says 'no suitable access module for `/Users/user/Desktop/Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares- 3 new episodes/RKN - Oscars.avi'
any help would be appreciated.

Try downloading/installing Perian, the Swiss Army knife of QuickTime plugins.

Try Flip4Mac and if that doesn't help then you may have to get (gulp) Windose Media Player. Flip lets QT play most of the Windows formatted media I've downloaded.

Try the freebie iSquint:
web page
If that doesn't do it, get its big brother VisualHub.
It's free to try and $23 if you like it.

AVI movies are often DivX. Do you have the DivX 6 Decoder? You can get it here.

Perian should take care of the DivX Decoder issue.
