In terms of Mac software support, Microtek BLOWS. Please move to next news story, and thank you for shopping at MacWorld.

I'll never buy another Microtek scanner again. Their software for the Mac is totally useless.

Hopefully, everyone will have a LONG memory of how many years it took them to come out with OS X drivers for their scanners. Also, for many years they were a virtual company, with no published address or phone - just an e-mail address. This allowed them to duck responsibility for tech support. Never again.

I recently purchased a refurbished Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner from the Epson online store for about $98 (lists new for about twice that on most web sites I checked). And it can scan photos, 35mm film, slides, and medium-format negatives (I'm using it to scan some 1940s-era b/w negatives that measure 2.25 x 3.25 inches). It has a standalone app, as well as a Twain driver that I've used to scan photos in GraphicConverter.

Micortek has the worst scanners. They are not only slow, but the end scan dose not look all the great. Canon or Epson, even if you have to spend a bit more. Scan Wizard 5 is a joke, and they list it as a feature. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a Microtek scanner and just downloaded the latest drivers. It turns out Microtek wants a program called Scan Finder to load at every start-up, and there is no way to disable this. The product works satisfactorily, but for my money, I will purchase something else. Something that doesn't create such a nuisance, and isn't so invasive.

If anyone thinks about a Microtek, they should take this into consideration - should think twice.
