Hopefully, everyone will have a LONG memory of how many years it took them to come out with OS X drivers for their scanners. Also, for many years they were a virtual company, with no published address or phone - just an e-mail address. This allowed them to duck responsibility for tech support. Never again.

I recently purchased a refurbished Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner from the Epson online store for about $98 (lists new for about twice that on most web sites I checked). And it can scan photos, 35mm film, slides, and medium-format negatives (I'm using it to scan some 1940s-era b/w negatives that measure 2.25 x 3.25 inches). It has a standalone app, as well as a Twain driver that I've used to scan photos in GraphicConverter.

I have a Microtek scanner and just downloaded the latest drivers. It turns out Microtek wants a program called Scan Finder to load at every start-up, and there is no way to disable this. The product works satisfactorily, but for my money, I will purchase something else. Something that doesn't create such a nuisance, and isn't so invasive.
If anyone thinks about a Microtek, they should take this into consideration - should think twice.
