...some retailers? Don't you mean one retailer? My memory could be faulty, but I'm pretty sure that Circuit City was the only store to carry either the players or the discs...

Circuit City was certainly the major retailer. But IIRC, DIVX hardware was also available through The Good Guys, Ultimate Electronics and Future Shop.
Let's see: The Good Guys shut down for good a couple of years ago; UE went bankrupt; and Future Shop was sold to Best Buy.
Let that be a lesson: DIVX was cursed. Cursed, I tell you!
