Yeah, it's a beta all right. The discussion boards are full of issues. I've been able to reproduce some of them. Pages that don't appear until you hit the reload button. Opening PDFs crashes the program. Dynamic HTML not working. And other unpleasant side effects. We'll probably see some updates fairly soon.

I am not seeing ANY of these issues on my installation. Safari 3 beta is running perfectly. It is also becoming clear that most problems people are reporting can be traced to third party plugins and/or input managers. One that is popping up regularly is Speed Download. And, human nature being what it is, people don't even remember installing these things. The knee jerk reaction is to blame the app instead of doing some basic troubleshooting.

two more problems
1) i've noticed that the screen zoom feature is missing now. (control + scroll button no longer works...)
2) and i have noticed that it also installs a new dashboard client, and with that change three of my most used widgets dont work....
looks like ill be uninstalling this beta, and crossing my fingers hoping for more

After a couple hours using Safari for Windows, I've switched back to Firefox. Safari on Windows is really pretty awful software. It doesn't look like any of my standard Windows software (doesn't obey the user's window L&F preferences), has horrible text rendering compared to Firefox on Windows, is a huge resource hog, and isn't noticeably faster. I'd put Safari far behind Firefox, IE7, and Opera on Windows.
In short, I think this was a huge mistake on Apple's part. It will alienate a lot of Windows users from Apple technology, and reinforce their perception that Apple just "doesn't get it". I'll certainly use it on my Mac at home, though, because it'll fit in with the Mac's look and feel a lot better than it does on Windows.

>Why wasn't there a bookmark sorting capability introduced
what do you mean? other than the three ways to sort bookmarks now?
1) in the drop down window (where you can make folders)
2) in the bookmark bar (where you can ALSO make folders)
3) in the bookmarks menu window (where you can ALSO ALSO make folders AND search through hundreds of bookmarks at once?)

Well, they finally put tabs in the object model, so now we can script those. But there's still no busy status indicator for a window. They need to add this... desperately. It is one of the most useful things one can put in a browser's scripting implementation.
As far as the speed goes, it's actually slower on my PowerBook than the old version.
But my biggest question is "did they fix the memory leak?" Safari has been a RAM sucking deamon and it will be great if this version fixes that problem.
Typing this message I notice that the display of letters is jerky and lags behind the key-presses by several characters. Ugh. This is definitely not fast.

It's funny, but it seems every setup is different and can yield different results in regards to the beta. At work, it installed and runs flawlessly. Haven't had a single hiccup or crash yet (crossing fingers)
At home, I had the same issue Adwiz had, where new pages would not load until I hit reload. The URL bar fills with the correct address, but nothing appears in the window. This is ONLY with new windows. Anything already filled with content, clicking on a link to load a new page in the current window seems to work OK.
So for now, I uninstalled it to get back to 2.04. My 2.04 seems to run faster now, if that's possible. Almost like it took the best of the speed enhancements from the 3.0 beta and kept it. I'm not complaining, but it is strange.
Also, not sure if anyone noticed this, but control (right) click on an element in any page and you'll see a new item in the contextual menu called Inspect Element. It brings up a nice black translucent inspector window a la iPhoto. I'd post a pic here, but I'm too lazy to upload it somewhere to link to. but check it out. Gives you a rundown of the CSS and other parts that make up the clicked on element. Very cool!

It works on my PowerBook.
That new element inspector is very cool for troubleshooting issues on web pages one is building.
And the memory sucking seems to be picking up. Only about 25 minutes into this "test" and it's not looking like this version is any better in the memory department. Must go see where the iCab situation sits right now.

Three features that I want to see:
1) Syntax coloring when using the View Source command.
2) Exceptions list for popup blocking. Right now, you have to set popup blocking to always on or always off.
3) Ability to choose specific javascript behaviors to block such as moving/resizing windows, hiding window elements (address bar, bookmark bar, status bar, etc). Currently, you either block all javascript or allow all javascript.

All excellent suggestions I've definitely needed the first two and would use the third too if it were available.

I do like the handle to expand text boxes for forum visits /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
No issues on Mac so far.
I would have preferred it didn't replace v2, but I understand they may not be able to support that.
I did notice my DP G5 is revving its fans a bit more or faster. Or this is just purely coincidental with for instance MacWorld having two flash ads for age of empires; which caused my cpus to run at >50% when they're in view and the fans revving up accordingly. ... I don't know. It just surprised me, again, to hear my machine rev up a few times just cruising macworld.
