Analysts say that extending Safari’s reach to Windows allows Apple to let developers on that platform familiarize themselves with Apple technologies so that they can develop for the forthcoming iPhone. more

The MacBreak Weekly podcast had an interesting spin ... Google affiliate income from searches through the search bar. Mozilla makes plenty on this model already. Only Apple knows for sure.

It willl be interesting to see how Microsoft responds, for if the iPhone does well in the market this could present a real threat to the browser share. Is it safe to assume business or mission critical apps developed to work with the iPhone will then require the Safari browser (or fully web complaint standards) to preserve security? If that's the case this will pose a different dynamic in the delivery of Internet apps.

You're probably right about web compliance. I've noticed the Safari beta is much more compatible with a few websites I couldn't use Safari with before. Such as Audible.com. Before I couldn't see my wishlist or some other links in the main bar. Now everything seems to work - and faster!
Good job Apple! Very smart to make development for the iPhone so easy, secure all the while driving support for Safari and Apple technology.

I haven't had a chance to test the beta. Of all the browsers I've ran through the web standards Acid Test, Safari 2 did the best rendering of the image. IE 6 sucks and Firefox did pretty good. I haven't test anything lately.
I will have to test Safari 3, Firefox and IE7 when I get home.
With Safari going to Windows, Firefox and the improvements in IE7 we will finally see the advantages of a fully compliant CSS website come to life!

the cross-platform Internet Explorer and Firefox enjoy

Hmm--Internet Explorer isn't usefully cross-platform these days. The Mac version never matched the Windows version (and in its day was the more standards-compliant browser from Microsoft).

The Windows Safari 3.0 beta (under Vista) handles this Hood Canal Bridge page correctly. As does every other browser I've viewed it with except Safari (released versions). The little camera icons (above the Squamish Harbor caption and above the ...State Park caption should be links to views from cameras in those locations. Finally in Safari 3.0 beta (on Vista) they are.
(Possibly accidental; possibly the fix related to my report to Apple.)

I'd have thought that the reason isn't just for the iPhone. Isn't it a sign of closer Apple-Google co-operation.
There is now a browser platform on Windows that Google has some influence over allowing them to develop cross-platform web based products for Windows and Mac machines without depending on Internet explorer. Google gain more independence from Microsoft while Apple gain market share and the "business difference" between the Mac and PC grows smaller and smaller.

Now thats a good point. The more independent Google is from Microsoft the better off they are, and this development certainly aids this cause. Good point. Microsoft will be forced to compete solely on merit of their browser, and we all know that they are not very good at that. It will be very interesting how MS response to this indeed.

What with Google and A, Inc being so tight these days, has anyone checked to see if Safari now fully supports GMail as Firefox does?
Faster or no, until that happens and there's something resembling the thousands of clever and highly useful add-ons to the Fox (like Cooliris and Googlepedia), I'm staying with Mozilla.

If you're seriously expecting someone to respond, you might want to list some things that you knew to be missing.

Drive for Marketshare = yes, and not just 'browser' marketshare like Steve-o's Badass Pie Charts showed.
Of course, welcome the masses, with a 2x faster Browser initally made for your OS (that is, OSX), ported over the fence with a giant rubber slingshot like the weight of a cannonball to the other OS (ok, 2 OS's, aka XP + Veeeeestaaaaa) . . . hey, actually, the look on Steve's face was like an extra 100 buckets of sloppy ripe tomatoes to sling over into MS's backyard, did you notice: "We are making your OS users' experience better with our software . . . why couldn't / didn't you accomplish this yourselves ???"
GO APPLE!!! GO SAFARI 3.0!!! GO BROWSE ON A PC WHEN YOUR'E AT WORK, JUST LIKE AT HOME!!!

Good point! D'ohh. And thanks....
The major missing piece is the Quick Contacts bar showing which of your contacts is on line and the ability to initiate a GMail Chat from that bar (even more things are missing in Mac-specific Mozilla Camino, which appears not be developing much, and maybe especially not now that Safari Everywhere is in effect). It may be paranoia, but it occurs Apple wants you to open iChat (with its nicer chat interface) rather than use another's technology...?
The only other semi-important missing item that comes to mind is the lack of the new reply button at the top right of an open eMail with a way handy drop-down that allows you to pick reply, reply to all, forward, print, add to contacts, delete, report phishing and more. There are also some buttons that are darker, no big whoop and I happen to like Mozilla's rendering a bit more, but those are nits. The lack of quick contacts is a deal-beaker for me.
