Steve didn't mention it in of his WWDC keynote last year or this, but the Leopard demo at Macworld Expo showed what amounted to the integration of Apple Remote Desktop into iChat. If this comes about it will be a major boon to people like me who do tech support. We will be able to easily tap into a client's computer and look around, without the need to install and maintain expensive third party software. I can imagine this as an excellent task for Spaces, segregating my work on another computer from work on my own.
Amid all the moaning and groaning on this thread I haven't noticed anyone mention the move of two major Game developers to the Mac, Electronic Arts and id. Since a paucity of Mac games has long been an issue, I should think these announcements would grab more attention.
The delay with Leopard has an upside that no one else seems to have noticed: Five thousand developers attending the WWDC will go home with the latest build of Leopard, giving them four months more to adapt their products to the new OS. By the rollout in October we will have just that much less to worry about regarding compatibility with all the bells and whistles we love to add to our Macs. I'll be keeping an eye on Version Tracker as they begin to catalogue Leopard compatible releases. By October the list should be substantial.
Apparently many find the Safari 3 beta less than impressive, as well, but I love the text box resize feature, thank you very much. Likewise, though perhaps not flashy, Safari on Windows is a big deal, strategically, for Apple, in my opinion.
I think the major source of disappointment with Steve Jobs' keynote this year has more to do with unrealistic expectations than with too much hype. Apple some years ago broke free from the constraints of trade show schedules for its product releases. This ultimately led to the demise of Macworld Boston. And it has resulted in many below the radar hardware upgrades in the last year, especially, as better and better Intel chips and bigger hard drives made their way into various Mac models, especially the laptops. Among these the availability of the Santa Rosa chip in the MacBook Pros is notable. Though the speed boost is modest, improvements to battery life and increasing RAM capacity by 33% are not inconsiderable improvements. These changes came about in a routine and even prosaic manner that is more typical of the computer industry as a whole, which doesn't make a big deal out of every incremental product line improvement.
Nevertheless, because Steve Jobs is such a consummate showman, we still expect a big deal every time he takes the stage, despite the obvious change in the actual rhythm of Apple product releases. We just haven't adjusted our own reality distortion fields to fit the new paradigm.

I agree with your sage observations--what a great idea to have re-sizable text boxes (as I re-size this text box)!
Web 2.0 apps for iPhone, et al, is also a big deal, and this along with iTunes and Safari for Windows will prove to be a serious Trojan Horse to the Redmond hegemony.
So the rats had better exit that ship while there are still mooring lines tied to the dock.

It is not just a developer event
Did Steve Jobs come out and say this event is all about MacOS X? I think the member of the news media have chosen to make this event in to something it's not supposed to be (all be it Apple's marketing has done nothing to stop it)

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I think you mean "albiet", not "all be it". Just thought I'd make a friendly correction. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
But I do agree with a lot of what you're saying. I think there's a lot of unfair assertions being made about what WE "deserve" from Apple . For example this whole ZFS thing. I know that it's been mentioned once or twice from a couple of different sources in the past, but you never heard anything about it's incorporation in Leopard in the mainstream until the Sun guy made his faux pas. And that was what, a week before WWDC? Now a huge majority on these forums are grumbling about how Apple let them down for not including ZFS. I just don't understand how a media reported statement from some guy who doesn't even work for Apple, a week before WWDC,can be taken as fact. People really do believe everything that they read. It's rather scary!

I vote with my wallet. This will be the first version of OS X that I pre-order.

Me too. I'll be getting the 5-license family pack if it's still offered. Too bad Steve didn't mention that bundle when he waxed poetic about OS X pricing... maybe it's deemed too good of a value to advertise.

I also thought of this then I remembered that Apple has never hyped the OS X Family pack.

Jobs is making too many mistakes. He saw how powerful Apple became with the iPod... so he tried to conquer a market that no one invited Apple to... the cell phone market. The iPhone is the answer to a question no one asked.

Since when have invitations ever been given out to "conquer a market"?
What is so incredible to me upon reading posts such as this one, is how everyone becomes such an expert on business. I remember when a lot of people were saying Jobs was making such a huge mistake not making iTunes a subscription based service, and yet here it is 2 years later and they have 70% of the market in digital music downloads. Everyone is such an expert on what Apple should do or where they made mistakes, etc. And these same people are experts on what Jobs is doing wrong. Jobs only guided Apple to a record $1 billion profit year, continuous $500 mil quarters, etc. Yeah he has absolutley no idea what he's doing. I'm not saying the man doesn't make mistakes, but I truly believe he knows more about how to run Apple than anyone on these forums does, otherwise bones21 would be running the company...and I don't think thats the case.

What was hyped??? the hype factor comes from the pending iPhone release. It's going to come out June 29, what kind of hardware announcement could Apple possibly make to make you jump from your seat? Bigger storage iPods (yawn)... faster Macs (they've been doing it all year) Different laptops (you just got the new Macboook Pro)...

Of course Apple deserves a lot of credit. However, I can't afford an iPhone, but was looking forward to an update to the iMac.

Is it just me or does Leopard look more like Vista than Vista? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have a prediction...
Watching Apple over the years, I can almost assure you what's going on right now behind the scenes. I've made a few predictions with friends over the years, and nearly all of them have hit the nail right on the head with how business has been going behind closed doors with Apple. I'm a business owner and a developer myself and can think no other way.
Watch what I tell you. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
New Leapord Feature(s) still to be unveiled...
Apple will hold a surprise keynote right on or just before the release date of Leapord. Maybe this is already public knowledge (not sure). Perhaps there's a few (perhaps prominant) flashy features that Steve is holding right up until that keynote. Either Steve isn't ready to dislpay them now, or he wants to give the details as a big unveil so as to create a marketing push and not just have leapord be a ho-hum release after the dust settles from this recent keynote. I'm sure he most likely has something up his sleeve only because I know his former keynote about keeping things secret implied something (and Steve did not want to unveil those until the release of leapord... and this recent keynote doesn't count). I'm pretty certain the delay of Leapord caught Steve off guard as he really wanted to unveil all the features for a big push, but with the delay Steve didn't want to compromise giving the full deck of cards with a release a few months down the road.
New Movie Studio and/or Record Studio on board
Perhaps it just wasn't in place at the time of this Keynote, but Steve will perhaps announce a new movie studio on board at the surprise KeyNote with either a new movie studio on board to sell movies on iTunes or a new Recording Studio on board with DRM-free tunes. Or one of both.
    iPhone application software
Apple will then unveil a way for developers to code for the iPhone (not just web). He promised it just a few weeks ago and he will follow up on that. Either he will base it off a language coders are used to or create a medium for them to do it, but it will be on the iPhone (i promise you that). It will not be with support for icons on the main navigation screen, but there will be some form of third party button on the navigation window that will take you to that list. He'll unveil this at the October surprise keynote. Why October... because he did in fact say "later this year"...
    Potential new Hardware Announcement
Perhaps a new firmware face lift of Apple TV or new processor upgrade for a mac in the line. Here's hoping anyway. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
[/list] As Shakespeare once put it... "alls well that ends well." And when the dust settles this year (at least in October), this June keynote will most likely be long forgotten.
    Let's hope so anyway.

With the announcements shown in the WWDC keynote, I feel that Apple has shown some features which are sure to cause vista to look dated.
I am worried however that due to the lack of an SDK for the iPhone will have drastic consequences for Apple: People will get the iPhone, say how wonderful it is, and then start realizing just how many things they would like it to have, and then realize that they can't download any new apps to their iPhone, and that will become the biggest complaint. I feel that if any company comes out with a similar phone a short while after the iPhone, that has downloadable applications, than that could be the end of the iPhone; the cell phone industry moves so fast that in order for apple to keep up with the competition, they would have to constantly update the iPhone's software.
I truly believe that what would have made the iPhone last for more than a year without needing another big update would have been if they had come out with 10.5 right before the iPhone came out, with special features for the upcoming iPhone and iPods.
If apple wants to get the most money, then they might as well introduce a wide screen multi-touch ipod that is priced quite a bit lower in price (so it won't compete with the iPhone), and then give the iPhone a much bigger hard drive.
I can't wait to buy a new computer that comes preloaded with 10.5
