when you let your battery die down all the way, it saves what you're doing and leaves some battery left to go into sleep mode.
but when i'm using my macbook and let the batter die down all the way, the macbook doesn't save anything and it turns off instead of sleep mode. what's happening here?

That's interesting...
Try resetting the System Management Controller. You might also want to try calibrating your battery.
Also, run Software Update to make sure you have all the latest firmware and such, just as a double-check.
