Frankly, Apple has had enough time to see what other smartphones do to figure out what features to add...

I was going to say the same thing.

My only concern about always-running apps in the background is their toll on battery life.

Re: To-Do notes
I think it's pretty obvious that iPhone users are going to see a To-Do functionality that mirrors the upcoming changes in Mail.app with Leopard. It seems like it would be a perfect fit (function-wise) for addition to the iPhone.

If Apple opens the iPhone to third party development, I'm certain we'll see an iChat-compatible application.
As to how much AT&T makes on SMS ... they only want $10 for 1500 SMS per month. Apple could easily write them a check covering potential SMS income for the rights to develop iChat for the phone. Having tried both, there's just no comparing the two: SMS is basically lame, since you have no way of knowing who is "online," nor of talking with more than one person at the same time.

Rob, this data is a little old its from August of 2006, but in the proceeding quarter the industry sent a total of 48.7 billion text messages. I don't know what percent of that was AT&T, but just as an intellectual exercise lets say a third of it was (given they are one of the three large players). That would mean in a single quarter they sent a little over 16 billion messages. Using your logic of 10 dollars per 1500 messages, assuming every user fully uses their allotment and no user goes over. That would represent a total revenue amount of 108 million dollars.
All of this is quite conservative because the number of SMS messages is grown about 25% over the last two years. My point is, Apple can't just write them a check.

...Now Apple had at least a year to develop the iPhone. Don't any Apple employees have more than just their "@apple.com" email addresses?...

Oh, I forgot to add that Voice Dial is an absolute must for me. I use my bluetooth earpiece all the time and love not having to pull my Razr out of my pocket when I want to place a call.

Apple employees apparently also never use their phones in their cars.
I am still baffled as to how a $600 product with the word "PHONE" in the name doesn't support voice dialing on day 1!
Does Apple expect everyone to stare at the iPhone screen and try to dial using one hand WHILE DRIVING THE CAR? Yes, I know this is what the vast majority of people do, but that doesn't make it right. Come on, it's a safety issue, more than a convenience issue!

Jobs, on the other hand, kept implying he wasn't interested in video on the iPod, and gave a convincing reason -- and then introduced the video iPod.

Nitpick: The current model is NOT a "Video iPod" rather an iPod with video, which Apple has been quite clear about.
The next gen model which will certainly be introduced in time for Back to School through holiday selling season (August?), and after Apple's had time to sell a few mill iPhones, will be the much iPhone-influenced first true "video iPod." Or actually the second, since the iPhone ("best iPod we've ever made") is the first.
I can't imagine this not happening, since it, or probably they, will mostly be (a) subset(s) of the iPhone interface and functions with more storage, tho' the click wheel may linger on in (slightly or majorly?) refreshed Nanos and Shuffles (double the storage?). Probably one ViP will have WiFi, another WiFi plus a huge disk and maybe a third cheaper model will eschew being an "internet communications device," content to play music and video on that great glass touchscreen.
This will all happen in time to stomp on any possible Zune 2.0 (available in Khaki green and Lavender) or other pretenders. And while others play catchup, look for a MacWorld announcement of another new device class, neither iPhone nor subnotebook, but betwixt in size and blending many of the best features of both the iPhone and Leopard OS and feature sets.....

"That would represent a total revenue amount of 108 million dollars."
That's about the figure I had in my mind when I wrote the above, give or take a few million here and there /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
Apple presently has just over $7 billion in cash in the bank. Writing a check for even $200 million would take just 2.8% of their current cash reserves. That's nothing, especially if it helped them sell even more $600 iPhones.

The lack of a voice dial is very puzzling to me. I would think that would be the most important feature given how Apple touts bluetooth. Why have a bluetooth headset if you can't dial from it?
I like the idea of having the same iPhoto interface to adjust photos. While not a killer must have, then again I don't have an iPhone either just hypothesizing, to me it seems more like a why not? If the iPhone is running OSX, why not include some basic iPhoto capabilities? Then again, as you mentioned, it seemed they would include iChat as well along with the ToDo's with the calendar and a full mail app.

that apple would go to calling it "wallpaper," hence the name for wallpaperizer. That's a windoze term, and seems jarring every time it's mention with a branded product such as this. So which user base were we playing to here? Of course, "desktop" wouldn't fit to well since there's no need for a desk for this thing, or a lap, just hand or a pocket.
So why not background pic?

That would be Background picker! Yes we don't have windows so we don't have walls. And so no wallpaper. The killer app (if the EDGE is fast enough) is VNC. It would be nice to use your computers power, apps and storage at home from you iPhone and have an SFTP connection for fast downloads. Then you have all the functions and 3rd party apps you want.
What you guys think?

What I would like to see is less people complaining about what the iPhone doesn't have. For Pete's sake, the damn thing has only been out a few days and people are saying, "I wish it did this, I wish it had that." It's the first generation!!!! Compare a first generation iPod with the fifth generation iPod - what a huge difference!
This phone will go through changes (some good, some bad) like everything else.
You can't have your cake and eat it too. Just be thankful that you make enough money to buy one.
However, what I would like to see is a patch for the new iTunes. The new upgrade damaged my sync; damaged my music library files; and caused havoc on my MBPro.

Dude- it costs like 500 for the phone plus 100/month at&T service, we'll demand whatever we want, thank you...

The applications I'm looking forward to are the ones that will be written for the next version of the iPod.
If the iPhone runs Mac OS X, and presumably the next iPod will run the same OS as the iPhone, and the iPod has no issues with internet security so Apple wouldn't have to close the OS to third-party apps, wouldn't we see a flood of applications written for the iPod interface in Cocoa?
If the next iPod runs OS X, is it a stretch to think that the next iPod is basically a very small Mac? Why wouldn't we be able to run any Mac app that has been optimized for the small touch screen and keyboard? With a 60GB hard drive or large flash drive, wouldn't this be something akin to a tablet Mac, albeit without some kind of handwriting recognition?
How about the entire iLife suite? (Okay, maybe I don't need Garageband on a 3.5" screen.) Or iWork?
I can't be the first person to think of these things as the next new computing devices from Apple.

Here's my top ten list of desired software upgrades:
1.) Full Flash support in Safari
2.) Widgets (if it works on OSX, it works on the iPhone)
3.) Ability to play WAV files from Mail (for voicemail)
4.) iTMS Ringtones
5.) To-Do List
6.) iPod Games
7.) iTunes Radio streaming when using WiFi
8.) Jabber chat client
9.) full RSS Newsreader
10.) up to the minute Sports Scores

Oooh, VNC - very clever idea! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
