I am trying to hook my Tivo up to my Mac iBook in order to let Tivo phone home. The iBook is on a wireless network, and by all reports this should work fine. I have a USB200M network adapter and an ethernet crossover cable, and it all seems to hook up fine. But Tivo tells me it can't connect because it can't find a DHCP server. The folks over at the Tivo forum say all I have to do is turn the DHCP server on, but they have no idea how to do that on a Mac (philistines!<g>). Can anybody help? I'm running Tiger, btw.
Thanks,
cmc

You will need to turn on Internet Sharing. Go to the System Prefs and select Sharing. The last tab in the result Pref window should be Sharing. Turn on the sharing for the built-in ethernet and click the Start button to start sharing the Internet connection.

Thanks, Tivo is now connecting to my laptop. My next problem is that it can't seem to find the Tivo website. I think for some reason it's not finding my airport internet connection. Do I need to change those settings, too? Or is there a problem with combining an ethernet connection (Tivo to computer) with a wireless one (computer to cable internet)?
Thanks for any help. I'm posting on TIvo forums, too, but they're clueless over there about Macs.

What exactly is your wireless network? Is it a DSL or cable modem line that you have a wireless router/access point connected to? If so, what is the router/access point?
How do you connect the TiVo to the MacBook? You mention a cross-over cable and a USB200M adapter. How do those come into play?
If you can connect to the MacBook fine, then turning on Internet sharing should give access to the Internet for the TiVo. The only possible wrinkle would be the Mac OS firewall blocking ports that the TiVo needs (assuming you have the firewall turned on). The Internet sharing does not have anything to do with connecting the TiVo to the MacBook, in general. It only allows an already connected device (i.e. your TiVo in this case...but other computers in general) to share the MacBook's Internet connection. It basically turns your MacBook into a (very expensive) router.

Thanks so much for the help. I decided to check my settings today and found that when I had turned on ethernet sharing, I had somehow turned off the airport sharing. Okay, I'm feeling really, really dumb now. Anyway, it all works fine now. Thanks again!

Sometimes looking to answer question that other pose in order to help you ends up helping you find the problem yourself. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
